About The Position

Alpha House is a "Housing First" and "Harm Reduction" organization that believes housing is a human right. They are seeking a Housing Caseworker to join their Community Housing team. This role involves working with individuals facing mental health and addiction challenges, utilizing a housing-first approach. The caseworker will need knowledge of community systems and program referrals applicable to client case plans. Key responsibilities include conducting regular assessments, developing action plans, providing crisis counseling, performing home visits, offering unit maintenance support, and setting goals. The position also involves collaborating with outreach services to transition individuals from homelessness to housing and supporting them in maintaining their housing by building community supports. The goal is to assist individuals through their transition from homelessness to housing and establish community support systems.

Requirements

  • Completion of at least a two-year post-secondary education in a related field from a publicly funded accredited post-secondary educational institution.
  • Current Vulnerable Sector Check (within the last 6 months).
  • At least two years of experience in Case Management and/or working with the homeless population.
  • Must possess a Class 5 Non-GDL driver's license.
  • A clear 5-year driver's abstract.
  • Three years of driving experience.
  • A reliable vehicle and willingness to transport clients.
  • Willingness to obtain a Class 4 driver's license within 60 days (Alpha House will cover the cost of the exam and medical if passed).
  • Strong knowledge of social services organizations and community support that provide culturally sensitive supports to single high-risk individuals.
  • Awareness of diverse Aboriginal cultures as well as the health and social issues faced by the homeless population.
  • Understanding and awareness of the Protection of Persons in Care Act.
  • Demonstrate support for the philosophies of Harm Reduction, Housing First, and participant involvement in program development.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct intake assessments and develop action plans in collaboration with the client using a strength-based approach.
  • Provide long and short-term case management to individuals, assessing their progress and identifying potential obstacles.
  • Provide ethical, efficient, and therapeutic crisis intervention in a timely manner.
  • Provide information and referrals to appropriate agencies.
  • Liaise with agencies and businesses to fulfill program needs.
  • Transport clients when appropriate.
  • Assist with move-ins/outs.
  • Assist clients in ensuring their residence is a clean and healthy space.
  • Provide safe care to the client in potentially dangerous situations.
