About The Position

Reporting to the Community Outreach Director, the Community Engagement Manager is responsible for building and maintaining an integrative, robust, and diverse volunteer structure designed to provide meaningful, rewarding, and engaging experiences for new and existing volunteers at both the Inland Valley Humane Society & S.P.C.A. (IVHS) and San Gabriel Valley Humane Society (SGVHS) campuses, as well as at off-site events. The Manager oversees the day-to-day operations of the Community Outreach Department and works collaboratively with all departments within IVHS and SGVHS to provide guidance and leadership for volunteers and the staff who supervise their efforts. This role also supports community engagement initiatives, outreach programs, humane education efforts, and partnership development that strengthen relationships with the communities served.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent qualification.
  • Must possess a positive demeanor, demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills, and have the ability to work well both as part of a team and independently.
  • 3-5 years of experience working for a non-profit rescue group, humane society, municipal shelter, or other animal welfare with an increasing level of responsibility.
  • Valid Driver's License and clear driving record.

  • Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science from an accredited university or college.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish/Mandarin) preferred.
  • Experience working in an open-access shelter
  • Customer-centric, open-minded approach to engaging with adopters, partners, visitors, volunteers, and colleagues; familiarity and comfort with an open adoption process.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, a team player, personable, professional, and able to get along with people from different backgrounds, as well as the ability to handle sensitive and confidential situations.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with well-developed organization skills to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands.
  • High proficiency with computers, experience with shelter management software, a plus.
  • Ability to independently manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work a varied schedule, including weekends and evenings, as required.
  • Excellent communication skills to develop healthy relationships with staff, volunteers, and donors.
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel).
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the volunteer program, ensuring appropriate training for volunteers.
  • Develops and/or enhances existing volunteer training plans for each of the shelter’s departments, ensuring coordination and support for volunteer engagement across IVHS and SGVHS.
  • Develops and maintains metrics designed to evaluate and track the impact of volunteer engagement and community participation.
  • Works closely with the Community Outreach Director and Fund Development team to develop opportunities for philanthropic engagement with volunteers and community partners.
  • Works collaboratively with the Community Outreach Director and Fund Development team to support community engagement efforts and identify opportunities to generate leads and strengthen relationships with potential donors and partners.
  • Creates volunteer job descriptions that clearly communicate expectations for volunteers at all levels.
  • Designs and implements volunteer recognition and appreciation initiatives, including “thank you” outreach and engagement events.
  • Addresses and resolves volunteer concerns, performance issues, and conflicts in a professional and timely manner, ensuring a positive and safe environment for all participants.
  • Recruits, trains, and oversees a volunteer ambassador program that supports humane education and community outreach throughout IVHS and SGVHS service areas.
  • Represents IVHS and SGVHS at community events, adoption events, and outreach programs.
  • Drafts press releases to promote programs, events, community initiatives, and urgent animal welfare matters in coordination with the Community Outreach Director and other departments.
  • Coordinates logistics for outreach and community events, including volunteer staffing, materials preparation, and on-site support.
  • Identifies opportunities for corporate involvement and community partnerships.
  • Works as a team member with other departmental leadership across both campuses.
  • Upholds the mission for IVHS and SGVHS and contributes to building a culture of philanthropy.
  • Ensures compliance with all organizational safety protocols, risk management practices, and animal handling guidelines related to volunteer and outreach activities.
  • May assist with coordination of volunteers and public communication during emergency response situations or disaster-related animal welfare efforts.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
