About The Position

Harry P. Leu Gardens is seeking a friendly, flexible, and organized Community Engagement Coordinator to lead our volunteer team and cultivate meaningful connections throughout the community. This role guides outreach initiatives, strengthens partnerships, and supports engaging educational events that invite new and returning audiences into the Gardens. The ideal candidate is a relationship-focused professional who thrives on collaboration and takes pride in creating experiences that feel purposeful, inclusive, and well executed. The Community Engagement Coordinator leads initiatives that strengthen relationships between Harry P. Leu Gardens and the broader community. This position oversees the volunteer program, community outreach efforts, strategic partnerships, and select educational events. The Coordinator plays a central role in cultivating meaningful connections and ensuring that the Gardens remains a welcoming and mission-driven resource for diverse audiences.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods and lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Background check required.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in volunteer coordination or community engagement is preferred.
  • Experience in a cultural institution, public garden, museum, or nonprofit organization is preferred.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of volunteer management systems and community engagement strategies.
  • Team-oriented and dependable, with a flexible and positive attitude.
  • Event planning and program evaluation experience.
  • Passion for community service, environmental education, and mission-driven work.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions. Approximately 85% of daily shifts are indoors, approximately 15% of shifts are outdoors. The percentages can change at any time depending on the needs of the operation.
  • Flexible availability, including evenings and weekends.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is preferred; proficiency in additional languages is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Volunteer Program Management – Recruit, onboard, and train volunteers to support garden operations, educational programs, events, and horticulture.
  • Coordinate volunteer scheduling and assignments to meet organizational needs.
  • Maintain accurate volunteer records and recognition initiatives.
  • Community Partner Communications – Develop and sustain relationships with community organizations and foster meaningful partnerships.
  • Organize Educational Events – Support the planning and implementation of educational programs and public-facing events.
  • Collaborate with internal departments to ensure events are mission-aligned, well-promoted, and effectively staffed.
  • Community Outreach – Represent Harry P. Leu Gardens at outreach opportunities such as community events and meetings.
  • Develop outreach programs designed to deliver nature-focused activities to a diverse audience.
  • Strategic Communication & Administration – Evaluate program outcomes and community impacts to inform future initiatives.
  • Deliver Educational Programming – Work with the rest of the Education Team to deliver tours, adult workshops, and student552 classes.
  • Assist other internal teams with a variety of tasks as needed.
