About The Position

This is an INTERNAL recruitment, open to current, permanent WA State Dept of Corrections employees only. Our agency offers a free ORCA card to all employees whose permanent duty station is assigned in King, Pierce, and Snohomish counties. Our agency is looking to INTERNALLY fill a full-time, permanent WMS02 Community Corrections Supervisor (CCS) vacancy within the Community Corrections Division (CCD). This position works the Special Needs Unit (SNU) located at 514 South 13th Street, Tacoma, WA 98402. The Special Needs Unit (SNU) supervises a caseload of individuals who have a serious mental illness involving cases where individuals have been found Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity and Special Finding of Violent Felony cases, along with those who have been sentenced to the Mental Health Sentencing Alternative. This unit works closely with mental health providers in the community. The CCS is an integral part of the Community Corrections Division management team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university whose accreditation is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), or foreign equivalent.
  • Five years of experience in the community corrections or related field.
  • Two years of supervisory or lead experience, which can be gained concurrently with the required experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a vehicle operator’s license valid in the state of Washington.
  • Equivalent combination of qualifying experience and education totaling nine years.

  • Demonstrated ability to provide positive leadership in times of stress, conflict, and unforeseen events.
  • Remain calm and rational while handling difficult situations to include volatile, threatening, or other crisis and emergency situations.
  • Expertly intervene in response to threats.
  • Understanding and working knowledge of supervised individual (S/I) management, including behavior management, security and safety, and S/I programs, including preparation of S/Is for success in the community.
  • Experience working with other governmental and/or social service entities in the development or implementation of a program, project, or other joint venture.
  • Complete a felony disclosure form prior to employment.
  • Complete and pass the psychological screening (Battery Exam and Psychological Interview/Evaluation).
  • Successfully complete, within mandated timeframes, employee orientation and all other mandatory annual, in-service, and other required training.
  • Become familiar and comply with all department policies and procedures and Collective Bargaining Agreements, as applicable.
  • Successfully complete the Firearms Academy and Control/Impedance Tactics (CIT) training within prescribed timeframes.
  • Maintaining eligibility to possess and use a firearm under federal and state laws.
  • Maintaining qualifications per department training standards with department-issued firearms and with Intermediate Force options (e.g., OC ‘pepper’ spray or electronic immobilization devices).
  • Maintaining CIT qualifications.
  • Completing all agency requalification training and an annual criminal history clearance to remain armed.
  • The selected candidate must be able to provide proof of identity and eligibility to work in the United States consistent with the requirements of Form I-9’s list of acceptable documents.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of Department of Corrections policies/procedures, RCWs, WACs, and ACA standards.
  • Experience applying the Sentencing Reform Act as it pertains to Community Placement, the Offender Accountability Act, and Sentencing Alternatives.
  • Experience in the effective application of Human Resource practices to maintain a trained and diverse workforce.
  • Staff who do not qualify for legacy status under the provisions for arming are required to be armed and must be willing and able to possess and use a firearm under federal and state law; maintain firearm qualifications; and successfully complete ongoing training requirements associated with mandatory arming and potential use of force.

Responsibilities

  • The overall management of the office.
  • Supervising individuals as it relates to RCWs, WACs, policy directives, and risk.
  • Supervising Community Corrections Officers and other corrections staff.
  • Developing, coordinating, and supervising various specialized DOC initiatives and programs for staff and supervised individuals (S/Is).
  • Supervise and manage staff, facilities, and work performed in assigned units.
  • Implement, direct, and evaluate statewide programs/policies, such as supervised individual (S/I) reentry, risk management, S/I programs, and community involvement.
  • Promote and uphold S/I standards and practices of the agency.
  • Completion of other administrative/managerial tasks.
