About The Position

Normandale Community College seeks a professional counselor to provide culturally responsive academic, career, and personal counseling to enrolled students. The successful candidate may also teach 2-3 sections of a 1-credit course for students each semester, CCD 1170 Career Exploration. This position involves working an academic calendar whereby the 162.5 working contract days are spread over the academic year from August – May, typically five days per week Monday – Friday, with at least 3 days on campus. Normandale Community College strives to achieve racial equity in educational outcomes. Those hired into these positions will be expected to advance this goal through culturally responsive teaching, identifying barriers to success for students of color, and proposing effective solutions to eliminate those barriers. Candidates hired who do not have a background in culturally responsive teaching will be expected to complete the College’s training.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in counseling, clinical mental health counseling, counseling psychology, or social work
  • One or more years of experience as a professional counselor

Nice To Haves

  • Current Minnesota Licensure as an LPC, LPCC, LP or LICSW as of the first day of employment
  • Experience supporting individuals and communities from traditionally marginalized and underrepresented populations
  • Experience working as a counselor in higher education, specifically in an advising, career, counseling or mental health center.
  • Experience creating and implementing educational outreach and programming.
  • Supervised internship in counseling, including experiences with mental health counseling and crisis intervention.
  • Previous experience teaching career exploration and/or first year experience courses, including use of culturally responsive pedagogical practices.
  • Experience in online learning and in course delivery using web-based course management systems such as D2L (Desire to Learn Brightspace).
  • Experience interpreting career and personality assessments, such as the Strong Interest Inventory, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), or CliftonStrengths
  • Proficiency in a second language, such as Somali or Spanish

Responsibilities

  • Provide culturally responsive academic, career, and personal counseling to enrolled students.
  • May teach 2-3 sections of a 1-credit course for students each semester, CCD 1170 Career Exploration.
  • Advance racial equity in educational outcomes through culturally responsive teaching.
  • Identify barriers to success for students of color and propose effective solutions.
  • Complete the College’s training on culturally responsive teaching if not already experienced.
