About The Position

The Community Builder works within United Way's "Hi Neighbour" initiative, responsible for implementing outreach strategies to foster relationship building and resident engagement in alignment with United Way's goals. The "Hi Neighbour" initiative focuses on place-based resident leadership and co-creation, supporting social connectedness, mutual aid, relationship building, and participation. Community engagement staff build relationships with community members and develop capacity in facilitation, social equity, empowerment, and asset-based community development. This role empowers communities by supporting residents in moving from engagement to leadership, resulting in citizen-led, caring, and connected communities.

Requirements

  • Reside in the Tri-Cities, BC (Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, or Port Moody).
  • Deep ties to the community and ability to leverage connections to work with resident leaders.
  • At least one year of experience working and/or volunteering in the community.
  • Ability to share an inspirational message and catalyze people to use their ideas to strengthen their community.
  • Creative ability to generate ideas with residents for community contribution.
  • Confidence in the process and ability to lean into discomfort and ambiguity.
  • Natural ability to develop relationships between residents.
  • Ability to lead a community event from planning to execution.
  • Comfortable working in a flexible environment with the ability to set own priorities and work plan.
  • Understanding of barriers to engagement in the community.
  • Willingness and ability to speak to the role of equity and targeted engagement in community development work.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to manage volunteer engagement, budget spreadsheets, tech platforms, and emails.
  • Comfortable using social media as a platform to engage residents and promote community initiatives.
  • Must have the full capacity to work remotely in their own home.
  • Provide own computer and phone.

Responsibilities

  • Implement outreach strategies to develop opportunities for relationship building and resident engagement.
  • Foster engagement, support community-led projects, and promote microgrant opportunities.
  • Work directly with residents, community groups, businesses, and volunteers to create caring, connected, and resilient neighborhoods.
  • Implement pre-determined strategies to support community members through the HN journey, from initial engagement to supporting community leadership development.
  • Develop sustainable community initiatives alongside residents that will last beyond United Way's involvement.
  • Motivate informal community champions and utilize connections to navigate resident networks and connect with groups and agencies.
  • Promote United Way's Local Love Fund microgrants to fund resident community initiatives.
  • Act as a brand ambassador and the neighborhood face of United Way, spreading the mission publicly through social media, community events, and direct outreach.
  • Bring in organizers and volunteers to increase opportunities with United Way initiatives.
  • Develop relationships with local businesses for revenue generation.
  • Perform other duties related to the qualifications and requirements of the job.
