About The Position

This role involves providing comprehensive support to assigned families throughout their pregnancy, labor, delivery, and postpartum period. The Community-Based Doula will initiate contact early in pregnancy, provide regular home visits, and offer emotional, physical, and informational support. A key aspect of the role is to prepare clients for childbirth and new parenting, attend births, and provide postpartum support for up to 12 months. The doula will also advocate for the mother-baby pair's needs, collaborate with medical providers, and make referrals to community resources. This position requires maintaining accurate documentation and confidentiality.

Requirements

High School graduate or equivalent.
Graduate of MDHHS-approved doula training program or must complete within 3 months of hire.
Current MDHHS doula certification (if already completed a training program prior to hire) specializing in birth, postpartum, and/or bereavement doula services.
Extensive childbirth experience.
Ability to demonstrate evidence of prior successful pregnancy, labor & delivery, and/or postpartum support experience.
Must possess computer skills.
Problem identification and resolution skills.
Ability to work toward mutually beneficial situations.
Self-motivated.
Decision maker.
Able to function with minimal daily supervision.
Organized and detail oriented.
Able to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, with a diverse population.
Must possess appropriate professional attitude and behavior.
Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, and liability auto insurance is required.
May require travel within service area and between GLBHC site locations.

Nice To Haves

Lactation Counselor certification is preferred.
Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.

Responsibilities

Initiate contact as early in pregnancy as possible with assigned families.
Attend scheduled appointments and be available for assigned families.
Visit pregnant and parenting women in their homes and other settings.
Prepare women for labor, delivery, and new parenting roles using provided tools and techniques.
Attend and support the mother and family through labor, delivery, and the immediate postpartum period.
Document billable services in the electronic medical record in a timely manner.
Visit the mother-baby pair after hospital discharge or per client preference.
Maintain postpartum contact to support breastfeeding, infant care, and provide emotional support for up to 12 months.
Advocate for and monitor the mother/baby pair’s medical and social needs using doula training and resources.
Develop relationships with community partners and medical care providers.
Maintain confidentiality of families served.
Make appropriate referrals to community resources as needed.
Participate in interdisciplinary and/or interagency meetings.
Represent GLBHC at community meetings as needed.
Plan and participate in community outreach activities, health fairs, and other GLBHC supported events.
Assist in the orientation and training of newly hired Community-Based Doulas/Perinatal CHWs.
Perform other duties as assigned.
