About The Position

The Community Arts Programmer is a specialized position assisting a community recreation coordinator/recreation supervisor in the development, coordination and implementation of a comprehensive community cultural development based Arts and Culture program, prioritizing work with an Indigenous focus. Programs and projects take place at Britannia Community Services Centres and in the Grandview-Woodlands and Strathcona neighbourhoods. This portfolio includes overseeing skill building arts programs such as music, dance visual and performing arts courses as well as community arts partnerships and community-engaged artist in residence projects. This position uses community development strategies grounded in authentic consultation and involvement of residents and community stakeholders in the co-creation, administration and delivery of arts programs and community engaged arts projects. Requirements

University graduation in Fine Arts or a related discipline and some related experience or an equivalent combination of training, education and experience.
Demonstrated experience with community-engaged, Indigenous and diverse community, inter-cultural and intergenerational arts projects and programming special events
Education or some equivalent training and experience in Indigenous people’s history and culture.
Experience working with Indigenous communities and knowledge of the inner city.
Demonstrated ability to develop programs and projects in consultation with community arts and cultural groups
Considerable knowledge of the Vancouver arts community including the current and emerging trends in community-engaged arts, environmental art and social practice
Knowledge of current and emerging trends in Indigenous art is considered an asset
Considerable knowledge of the urban Indigenous communities in Vancouver, including the ability to successfully outreach to the community and implement urban Indigenous protocols
Knowledge of provincial and national legal standards and requirements in the arts (copyrights, fees etc.)
Ability to organize and direct others in a variety of community-engaged arts projects
Ability to provide supervision and guidance to support staff, artists and volunteers
Strong written and verbal communication, presentation and interpersonal skills
Ability to work effectively as part of a team
Ability to deal tactfully with the public in a diverse community and to work collaboratively with a multi-agency organization.
Good computer skills and ability to learn and adapt to current and new computer software applications as well as a working knowledge of ActiveNet, Point of Sale and Excel are preferred.
Good digital camera and social media skills preferred
Knowledge of Indigenous knowledge-sharing practices, programming, and protocols is an asset

Responsibilities

Coordinates and supports community engaged arts programs and projects.
Supervises and facilitates community engaged arts programming and projects which may take the form of special events, conferences, artist in residence projects, exhibitions and workshops.
Works cooperatively with Society staff and Partners, Society Committees, professional artists, arts and culture organizations and the community to understand community needs and interests regarding community engaged arts.
Coordinates and supports arts partners who present performances, exhibitions and festivals.
Conducts outreach and develops and maintains effective partnerships with community groups, arts organizations, post-secondary institutions, libraries, artists in a broad array of disciplines and service and recreation organizations towards the delivery of community engaged arts programs.
Assists Britannia’s Manager of Organizational Change with supervision and programming for šxʷqʷeləwən ct Britannia Community Services Centre’s Carving pavilion in partnership with the VSB and consultation with the local indigenous community.
Develops and facilitates Indigenous artist in residence projects.
Is responsible for the supervision of the Britannia Art Gallery and the contracted curatorial staff.
