About The Position

The Virginia State Police (VSP) is seeking to hire a Communications Technician in our Communications Division located in Lebanon, Virginia. The job duties for this position include but are not limited to: Conducting installation, removal and servicing of equipment located in remote fixed sites and various types of mobile subscriber configurations for each of the agencies participating in the Statewide Radio System. Solving complex technical problems with communications equipment. Preparing reports regarding work performed, and updating maintenance data and inventory information to enable other technicians to perform or continue work.

Requirements

  • Advanced electronic theory and practices applicable to fixed and mobile microprocessor controlled Land mobile Radio and Microwave Point to Point systems of trunked, digital, and analog architecture, dispatch telephone systems, vehicle based video capture systems, emergency power generator systems, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) remote site systems, PC laptops used for mobile data, and supporting environmental and physical plant equipment.
  • Use of computers and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to install, repair, and maintain, equipment and/or software related to the mentioned systems.
  • Ability to work alone or part of a team.
  • Ability to serve on a rotating 24/7 emergency call out schedule.
  • Ability to prepare, maintain entries into service record and asset management databases.
  • Ability to interact with co-workers, Agency personnel, general public, and others contacted internally and externally in the course of work.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds unassisted.
  • Must live within a 90-minute drive of the radio shop where the employee is assigned.
  • Experience in working military, civilian trade school, or equivalent.
  • Possession of a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) General Radiotelephone Operators License or recognized equivalent within six months of employment required.
  • Possession of a valid Virginia Driver’s License.
  • Possession of a Registered Technician certification through the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Pesticide Program within six months of accepting employment and maintain certification for duration of employment.
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent.
