About The Position

We are seeking a Communications Strategist to support clients at the U.S. Department of Energy. This role is responsible for translating complex research and policy developments into clear, strategic communications for external and internal audiences. This is a contractor communications role supporting the Senior Advisor to the Under Secretary for Science at the Department of Energy. The primary work is proactive communications across the Under Secretary’s portfolio which includes the Genesis Mission, a national initiative to accelerate science through artificial intelligence. Primary duties will include developing story angles, managing quotes and releases, reviewing materials, and coordinating with DOE offices, Public Affairs, and external partners. The role also provides communications-focused staffing to several principals in the office, including event support and contributions to daily briefing materials. It suits a fast, accurate writer who is comfortable moving between drafting under deadline and coordinating across multiple offices.

Requirements

  • Must have a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and at least 7 years of experience. Alternatively, must have a Master’s degree in a relevant field and 5 years of experience.
  • U.S. citizenship is required with verbal and written fluency in English
  • Must be able to receive and maintain a federal security clearance (public trust level)
  • Must be based in Washington, D.C. – This onsite role will report to federal client locations daily.
  • Strong writing skills with a track record of producing client-ready deliverables.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and develop story angles within the DOE science portfolio for use across communications channels.
  • Respond to requests from DOE offices for quotes and statements for press releases.
  • Review draft materials on behalf of offices for accuracy, tone, and message consistency.
  • Coordinate with external organizations on joint or partner releases.
  • Coordinate with Public Affairs on office-driven press releases.
  • Support the office's Deputies on messaging, speeches, and event communications.
  • Contribute communications content to the Deputy Assistant Secretary's briefing materials, including talking points, story angles, and cleared quotes.
  • Staff prep calls ahead of events and lab visits and manage communications follow-up.
  • Coordinate logistics, materials, and messaging for events and lab visits across the portfolio.
  • Manage correspondence with event organizers on details as they relate to communications.
