About The Position

Under the supervision of a Communications Officer, the successful candidate will answer 911 and other calls for emergency assistance. This is a permanent position, subject to layoff as per collective agreement.

Requirements

  • Ability to deal effectively with the public in stressful situations in a fast-paced emergency response environment.
  • Clear English communication and comprehension skills.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Proven keyboarding skills of a minimum 40 words per minute, with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Completion of APCO (Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials) "Public Safety Telecommunicator 1, 7th Ed., Canada" course or completion of NFPA 1061, are definite assets.
  • Level 3 – Vulnerable Check will be required of the successful candidate, as a condition of employment, at their own expense, to verify the absence of a criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduation from an accredited post-secondary Emergency Services Dispatch program is a definite asset.
  • Emergency communications experience and/or related post secondary education are definite assets.

Responsibilities

  • Receive fire alarms, operate telephone and computerized dispatch equipment.
  • Maintain radio contact with fire service vehicles, both at emergencies and other departmental activities.
  • Perform system tests, record activities and perform related communications functions as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
