About The Position

This position is for a Communications Network Engineer at Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division Orlando (ORLO) as part of the NGEN program, the largest IT services program for the Navy. The role involves providing core backbone support for the Navy-Marine Corps Intranet, including cybersecurity, network operations, service desk, and data transport. The engineer will analyze and define network requirements, plan, design, and evaluate network components, and recommend new technologies. Support duties include monitoring, installation, modification, testing, and servicing of network equipment. The role requires the ability to work on a government site with specific physical demands and the use of basic hand tools and test equipment. The engineer will also be responsible for driving to different locations for project work and troubleshooting.

Requirements

  • Must be a US Citizen and possess a DoD Secret Clearance.
  • HS diploma with 4+ years of prior relevant experience, additional related education or certifications may be considered in lieu of experience.
  • Valid DoD 8570 IAT Level II: Security+ or higher Certification.
  • Must have an active CCNA Certification.
  • Must demonstrated expertise in IT Enterprise Operations and Network Operations.
  • Experience with Microsoft Windows OS, version 10.
  • Experience with HP Service Manager, Remedy, or similar Service/Help Desk ticket management software.
  • Advance network troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs. for up to a 100 feet at a time; must be able to lift 25 lbs. vertically using ladders.
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces, such as raised floors or communications closets; must be able to work in noisy environments, such as data centers and operations centers; must be able to stand or sit for 8 hours at a time.
  • Must be able to utilize basic hand tools such as screwdrivers and wrenches while rack mounting active and passive equipment using small screws and brackets.
  • Must have normal color vision to identify different colors of wires and cables; must have correctable vision to 20/20 or better so you can see objects and information displayed in schematics, test equipment, and computer monitors; must have depth perception to be able to judge distance between objects to work safely on ladders and in confined spaces; must be able to use and read digital test equipment such as OTDR (optical time-domain reflectometer).
  • Must be able to drive personal or corporate vehicle (depending on availability) to different locations to work on projects and troubleshoot issues; valid state license required.

Responsibilities

  • Changing Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN)s on network port configurations to assist in deploying network devices across the base.
  • Defining and maintaining network architecture and infrastructure.
  • Configuring and optimizing network servers, hubs, routers, and switches.
  • Generating switch activity logs, as well as switch capacity reports.
  • Making recommendations to clean up or upgrade communication closets for streamlining switch and patch panel matrixes.
  • Performing port activation, deactivation, and logical moves on switches, in support of emergent Move/Add/Change (MAC) moves.
  • Engaging the NMCI Network Operations Center (NOC) for support for incidents/problems exceeding their capabilities or networking privileges.
  • Assisting with diagnosing and resolving network problems.
  • Installing, testing, maintaining, and upgrading network operating systems software; and/or ensuring the rigorous application of information security/information assurance policies, principles, and practices in the delivery of network services.
  • Providing monthly activity reports on tracking trouble calls, outages, port problems and resolutions, and routine maintenance pertaining to NAWCTSD NAVAIR operations.
  • Providing primary contact information in case the Government must contact or recall the resource during the stipulated Premier Support periods.
