About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Community Information Officer, the Communications & Marketing Specialist is responsible for managing the City’s social media accounts and generating videos and photos, ranging from short clips to long-form storytelling, that convey City of University Park stories in innovative, authentic, memorable, and captivating ways. Photography and videos will be used on the City’s website, in print publications, advertising, public relations outreach, e-mail communications, across social media platforms, and in other media as needs arise. This position will assist with writing, designing, and editing marketing materials for City programs and serve as the primary backup for the Community Information Officer. Provides assistance to residents by answering inquiries and submitting service requests. Provides administrative support to the City Manager’s Office.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, Communications, Public Administration, Business Administration, or a related field required.
  • Two years of general municipal experience in marketing, advertising, or journalism.
  • Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels above the minimum qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above-specified education and experience requirements.
  • Texas Class C driver’s license required.

Responsibilities

  • Develops, coordinates, and monitors City messaging via social media, including but not limited to Instagram, Nextdoor, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube, as well as the City website, to inform and educate the public; provides customer service through social media.
  • Develops social media campaigns to increase community engagement.
  • Coordinates the City’s online presence and other digital communication tools.
  • Supports the planning and execution of social media advertising.
  • Tracks social media trends and prepares reports on City social media insights.
  • Regularly monitors and interacts with followers of the City’s social media accounts.
  • Attends City events to capture photography and videography and creates engaging social media content that highlights and promotes City programs, activities, and initiatives.
  • Creates marketing and promotional materials for external media, including social media and print publications.
  • Assists other departments in designing and producing promotional materials, including brochures, flyers, web content, banners, etc.
  • Provides support to City departments in marketing and promoting special events, campaigns, services, and programs.
  • Develops scripts and produces short videos for social media and public service announcements and long-form videos for the City’s YouTube channel.
  • Assists the Community Information Officer with the development and production of the City’s annual report.
  • Implements and coordinates proper promotion and representation of the City of University Park.
  • Assists the Community Information Officer with ensuring integrated, coordinated, and consistent messaging across all City communication channels.
  • Maintains the City’s branding guidelines by following and enforcing proper use of logos, fonts, colors, slogans, and other branded materials.
  • Assists with the development and presentation of communication-related curriculum for internal training purposes.
  • Assists with writing, proofreading, and editing City publications, including but not limited to press releases, website articles, newsletter articles, and social media captions.
  • Manages the City’s digital asset library.
  • Manages and creates content for the City’s internal digital message boards.
  • Serves as the secondary point of contact and liaison for local media and coordinates requests for articles and information.
  • Serves as the primary point of contact in the absence of the Community Information Officer.
  • Writes and publishes the monthly employee newsletter.
  • Provides public outreach assistance and performs social media monitoring during emergencies, as needed.
  • Answers the 311 line and provides accurate information and/or processes appropriate service requests, takes messages, and routes calls to all departments.
  • Assists with reception duties at City Hall in the absence of the receptionist.
  • Provides support to the City’s Youth Advisory Commission.
  • Manages special projects as assigned and performs other job-related duties as required or directed.
