About The Position

Simon Fraser University (SFU) is a leading research university dedicated to advancing an inclusive and sustainable future. The Communications & Marketing (C&M) team at SFU comprises consultative problem-solvers who develop strategies to inform key audiences and influence their attitudes, perceptions, and behaviors in support of SFU's vision. This role specifically supports SFU's diverse, three-campus community of faculty, staff, and students within the internal communications portfolio. The Communications and Marketing Officer will act as a trusted communications advisor for People Strategies, IT Services, Information Security Services, and other university partners. This role involves leading communications strategies that shape the experiences of students, faculty, and staff at SFU. Reporting to the Faculty and Staff Communications & Marketing team, the Officer will develop and execute proactive, integrated communications to advance institutional priorities, support organizational change, and enhance engagement across the university. The position requires working with leaders and stakeholders in a dynamic environment, offering strategic counsel, identifying emerging issues and opportunities, and crafting clear, effective messaging to foster understanding and connection. Success in this role depends on building strong relationships, strategic planning, and compelling storytelling to ensure communications are audience-focused, inclusive, evidence-informed, and aligned with SFU's values, brand, and strategic goals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Marketing, Communications, Journalism or related field and five years of related professional experience, including experience in developing and implementing marketing and communications plans and budgets or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Knowledge and use of communications planning and change management best practice.
  • Analytical skills to evaluate strategy success.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a trusted communications advisor to People Strategies, IT Services, Information Security Services, and other university partners.
