About The Position

The Communications Helper is an entry-level position designed to develop the skills and knowledge required to become a communications Technician. Under direct supervision, the Communications Helper will assist in the installation, testing, maintenance, and repair of radio communication systems and other electronic equipment. This position is intended as the first step toward a communications Technician career path. Successful candidates are expected to demonstrate the aptitude, work ethic, and commitment required to progress into a formal apprenticeship once the apprenticeship class starts. This role is designed to transition into a Communications Technician Apprenticeship program, based on performance, attendance, and demonstrated capability. Apprentices will be trained to perform all duties of a communications Technician over a structured four-year program. This is an excellent opportunity to start a long-term career in utility communications. You will gain real-world experience, receive structured training, and advance into a highly skilled Communications Technician role.

Requirements

  • Strong willingness to learn and develop technical skills
  • Ability to follow directions and work effectively under supervision
  • Basic computer skills and ability to learn technical software
  • Ability to read and understand technical documents with training
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Interest in electronics, communications systems, or related technical field
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn technical skills
  • Ability to perform basic math (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Candidates must be able to obtain required FCC licensing as part of their apprenticeship progression

Nice To Haves

  • Technical training or coursework related to electronics, telecommunications, or networking
  • Familiarity with basic hand tools and electrical/electronic equipment
  • Exposure to radio systems, networking, or fiber optics (academic or hands-on)

Responsibilities

  • Assists with the installation, testing, adjustment, maintenance, and repair of radio communication equipment.
  • Assists with installation and maintenance of supervisory systems including power line carriers, SCADA, RTU systems, fiber optics, and communication networks.
  • Supports troubleshooting activities using test equipment under the guidance of experienced technicians.
  • Assists in reading and interpreting basic diagrams, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Performs general support tasks including material handling, equipment setup, and job site preparation.
  • Completes basic clerical and documentation tasks related to field work.
  • Works collaboratively with Communications Technicians and apprentices to gain hands-on experience.
  • Operates company vehicles and tools assigned.
  • Working in a substation environment and working with other departments in troubleshooting high voltage equipment.

  • Hourly rates will be paid in accordance with terms of the candidate’s skills, qualifications, experience or collective bargaining agreement: $24.27/Hr.
