About The Position

Spokane Falls Community College (SFCC) seeks qualified candidates for consideration of employment in an adjunct (part-time) faculty position in the Communication Studies program (CMST) in the Humanities and Social Science division. Communication Studies is part of a dynamic and multi-disciplinary department, Communication Arts and Modern Language, which include Drama and Film Studies, and 3 modern languages (French, Japanese and Spanish). We seek applicants with a high degree of professionalism and reliability, a strong commitment to our students, and the ability to motivate and educate in an engaging manner across various modalities. The college strives for faculty who are content experts in communication studies and who are knowledgeable about best practices, innovative teaching strategies, and effective instructional technologies. Classes may be taught in the morning or afternoon, and may be delivered hybrid, F2F, or online modes of instruction. Requirements

• An earned Master's degree in Communication Studies or closely related discipline from an accredited institution with emphasis or study in the teaching areas outlined above.
• Experience equivalent to teaching one course per quarter/semester for a full academic year. (Graduate teaching assistant experiences are relevant)
• Evidence of instructional excellence. Acceptable forms of documentation may include student/peer, and/or supervisory evaluations.
• Proficiency in classroom instructional technology and learning management system technology (Spokane Falls Community College uses Canvas for our Learning Management system)
• Demonstrated competence in working with diverse student populations and an expressed appreciation for diverse voices in the classroom
• Ability to articulate the role that community college’s mission and values play in higher education and how SFCC advances them.

Nice To Haves

• The successful candidate will be a well-qualified Communication Studies generalist with a combination of teaching experience and coursework which would enable the candidate to teach at least two of the following in addition to Intercultural Communication, Introduction to Communication, Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communication or Gender Communication.
• Demonstrated commitment beyond the classroom to advance diversity, promote equity, and prepare students to live responsibly in an increasingly global civilization.
• Experience equivalent to one year of full-time post-secondary teaching experience (graduate students are encouraged to apply).
• Experience in a variety of teaching modalities including on ground, online, hybrid
• Community college teaching experience.
• Demonstrated ability in curriculum design and development that is innovative, equity-minded, and engaging using classroom instructional technology and learning management system technology.

Responsibilities

• Prepare for and instruct classes in Communication Studies in various modalities (face-to-face, hybrid, and online), which may include Introduction to Communication, Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communication, Gender Communication, Intercultural Communication, or Job Communication Skills.
• Provide availability and accessibility to students through a combination of scheduled office hours, e-mail accessibility, and other effective means of responsive and timely communication.
• Communicate expectations and establish clear grading criteria through appropriate instructional means, to include but not limited to developing course syllabi, handouts, and materials supporting the instructional process; evaluate student progress and provide clear, timely feedback.
• Comply with state and federal law applicable to professional duties and responsibilities; follow established procedures in areas such as printing, turning in grades, bookstore orders, student safety and health issues and related administrative processes.
• Support and advance the Spokane Colleges strategic plan and perform other duties as assigned.
