About The Position

This recruitment is for a Public Service Commission Common Carrier Inspector position with the Maryland Public Service Commission. The position involves inspecting for-hire passenger carrying vehicles and their records to ensure compliance with federal and state safety regulations. The role also includes educating carriers on these requirements and participating in joint safety initiatives.

Requirements

Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Four years of experience in the repair and maintenance of gasoline or diesel-powered motor vehicles or in the inspection of such vehicles for the purpose of ensuring their safe operating condition.
Possession of a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
Candidates may be responsible for providing their own transportation as needed.

Nice To Haves

Experience in law enforcement activities including vehicle inspections.
30 credit hours from an accredited college or university.
U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer involving staff work requiring regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting rules and regulations in accordance with agency laws and policies.

Responsibilities

Inspect for-hire passenger carrying vehicles (buses, vans, limousines, automobiles) for compliance with Maryland Public Utility Companies Article, Code of Maryland Regulations Title 11 and 20, Transportation Article Title 22, and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
Inspect for-hire passenger carriers' records to assess the effectiveness of their Preventive Maintenance Program and driver qualification/hours of service monitoring systems.
Educate carriers on Federal and State safety regulations and standards.
Maintain current certification from the Maryland State Police for safety inspections according to North American Standards.
Prepare forms and memorandums regarding vehicle inspections, preventive maintenance, and vehicle safety.
Participate in joint safety initiatives such as the National Passenger Carrier Strike Force, roadside safety enforcement, and motor coach investigations as part of the Maryland Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program (MCSAP).
