Commissioning - Systems Engineer I

Torc Robotics•Ann Arbor, MI

About The Position

Torc is developing software for automated trucks as part of the Daimler family. The Commissioning - Systems Engineer I supports integration, testing, evaluation, and requirements development for self-driving software and related systems. The role works across vehicle systems, test benches, extended testing teams, and engineering organizations to improve the autonomous driving platform and its release process. The engineer supports integration of new and existing self-driving software, troubleshoots component and system issues, develops and executes test plans, and evaluates software updates on closed courses and public roads before extended testing. The position analyzes testing data and road failures, tracks system performance KPIs, manages issues through resolution, documents best practices and test gaps, and identifies opportunities for new tools and automation. The role also contributes to product and system requirements for the TORC Virtual Driver and the broader Autonomous Ecosystem. This includes interpreting data, defining functional design requirements and architecture, maintaining requirements traceability to verification tests, and coordinating with development, functional safety, and architecture teams. The work considers applicable safety standards, including ISO 26262 (FuSa) and ISO 21448 (SOTIF), as well as system design, hardware, software, validation, and operational considerations. The position requires transportation to locations away from the work site, a valid U.S. driver’s license and safe driving record, and appropriate PPE in designated areas. Occasional travel, outdoor weather exposure, and overtime may be required. Candidates must be willing to collaborate across locations and time zones and maintain technical knowledge through ongoing education and training.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 0–3+ years of experience, or competencies and technical proficiencies typically acquired through that experience.
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license with a safe driving record.
  • Ability to travel to locations away from the site.
  • Ability to work occasional overtime and remain flexible.
  • Ability to collaborate across locations and time zones.
  • Willingness to complete continuous technical education and training.
  • Ability to obtain a passport and appropriate documents if international travel is required.
  • Ability to use appropriate personal protective equipment in identified areas.

  • Passion for self-driving technology and its potential impact.
  • Knowledge of ISO 26262 (FuSa), ISO 21448 (SOTIF), and other emerging standards.

Responsibilities

  • Support integration of new and existing self-driving software onto vehicles and test benches.
  • Assist with troubleshooting component and system integration issues and guide teams toward efficient resolutions.
  • Develop and execute test plans, including closed-course and on-road evaluation of updates before deployment to extended testing groups.
  • Evaluate full-system performance, assess relevant subsystem contributions, and provide feedback to development teams.
  • Use results from automated software testing to improve the efficiency of the system integration release process.
  • Maintain a rapid integration and deployment schedule for the self-driving software stack and deliver consistent releases to extended testing teams.
  • Perform first-tier analysis of extended testing data and share insights into system performance across the organization.
  • Manage system issues from identification through resolution.
  • Create requirements for tools or automation that increase testing capabilities.
  • Track and report system performance and testing KPIs on a regular basis.
  • Provide integration issue-resolution support to other testing teams.
  • Triage road failures and use results to understand and document test gaps.
  • Document best practices exhaustively.
  • Derive product requirements from external stakeholders, regulatory bodies, liability review, and societal expectations.
  • Research and interpret data and define functional design requirements and architecture for the TORC Virtual Driver and related Autonomous Ecosystem systems.
  • Ensure product requirement specifications address security, performance, manageability, quality, and consistency, and provide technical guidance to development teams.
  • Lead design discussions across organizations concerning technical details, hardware, software, functional safety, validation, and operational considerations.
  • Evaluate and recommend tools, technologies, and processes to support a high-quality product platform.
  • Support development of system requirements specifications, including the dynamic driving task, functional flow block diagrams, and requirement derivation and allocation to components based on ASIL designation.
  • Maintain traceability between requirements levels and map requirements to verification tests throughout the product life cycle, including iterations and proposed requirement modifications.
  • Collaborate with functional safety engineering teams to align the design process with safety requirements, safety goals, and relevant standards and best practices.
  • Collaborate with architecture engineering teams to align the design process with system, hardware, and software architecture.
