About The Position

In this role, you will establish, administer, and implement the suite of startup applications, flushing and pipe cleaning engineer ensures that internal piping surfaces meet strict cleanliness, operational, and regulatory standards before system startup or handover. This role combines mechanical engineering, fluid dynamics, and water chemistry. A flushing and pipe cleaning engineer plans, designs, and oversees the removal of debris, scale, and contaminants from industrial or commercial piping systems prior to startup or during maintenance. This position requires travel to various project sites and the ability to work from one of Bechtel's office locations as needed. This position is designated as part-time telework per our global telework policy and will require at least three days of in-person attendance per week at the assigned office or project. Weekly in-person schedules will be determined by the individual and their supervisor, in consultation with functional or project leadership.

  • Requires bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 10-13 years of relevant experience or 14-17 years of relevant work experience

Nice To Haves

  • 15+ years working in pre-commissioning, water treatment, hydronic/HVAC systems, or oil and gas pipeline operations.
  • Proficiency in reading P&IDs, understanding fluid flow velocities, and analyzing basic water or oil chemistry.
  • Valid OSHA 10/30 certification and relevant safety training (e.g., HAZWOPER for industrial or oilfield environments).

Responsibilities

  • Design and review flushing, blowing, and chemical cleaning methods, calculations, and sequences based on project specifications.
  • Inspect piping layouts, P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams), and mechanical sign-offs to confirm readiness for testing.
  • Supervise dynamic water flushing, high-velocity oil flushing, or air/steam blowing loops.
  • Coordinate degreasing, acid pickling, passivation, and biocide dosing with chemical specialists.
  • Monitor parameters like flow velocity, pressure, turbidity, and iron/conductivity levels to meet acceptance criteria.
  • Enforce safety protocols, including confined space entry, chemical handling, and hazardous waste management per OSHA guidelines.
  • Establishes data requirements for the startup automation tools in accordance with the project automation plan, designing/developing workflows, forms, and templates for automation tools.
  • Customizes applications and reports (e.g., SmartCompletions, Q4Safety, PowerBl, SQL server reporting services (SSRS), etc.) to support startup reporting requirements.
  • Prepares test plans, migration plans, job aids.
  • Develop relationships across integrated team, contractors, and third parties.
  • Supports reviews of performance curves, metrics, trackers, and user feedback to show trends.
  • Recommends adjustments in coordination with the Project Startup Manager, Project Field Engineer, and Site Manager.
  • Manages output data and prepares startup reports with direction from Project Startup Manager, Project Field Engineer, and Site Manager.
