The Project Engineer assists Project Managers to ensure that work installed on the project meets plan and specification requirements. The Project Engineer assures compliance by becoming intimately familiar with the assigned project plans and specifications, reviews shop drawings and submittters, and assists high-performing teams throughout the construction and commissioning lifecycle, especially for complex, mission-critical facilities such as data centers, hospitals, laboratories, and airports. They foster integration across disciplines—mechanical, electrical, controls, and operational technology platforms—to ensure seamless system performance. The role involves reviewing plans from the standpoint of value analysis and constructability, ensuring appropriate materials are utilized, and communicating inconsistencies to the architect. Additionally, the Project Engineer recommends labor-saving and other cost-saving methods to benefit Layton and/or the owner. They attend and take notes for project team meetings, including weekly Owner/Architect meetings and subcontractor coordination meetings, and distribute meeting minutes. The role also involves publishing weekly progress reports for assigned projects and following up for receipt, review, and distribution of information required for project construction, as well as updating project schedules as needed. The Project Engineer assists in bidding and developing scope of work for trade contractors, and works with the superintendent to prepare project schedules, including establishing dates for receiving shop drawings and milestones necessary to complete the project on time. They follow up for review and approval for shop drawings, samples, material lists, etc., and maintain logs reflecting the status of shop drawings, requests for clarification, change requests, and proposal requests. The role also includes advising on proper procedures for concrete pours, inspecting structural reinforcing, and coordinating standard slump and compaction testing to verify compliance to specifications. They review field procedures and final installation of structural elements to ensure compliance of the work, perform work sampling, and observe and analyze work methods, techniques, and procedures to advise the superintendent on improvement of production efficiency. Compliance with all safety policies, practices and procedures is required, and unsafe activities must be reported to a supervisor and/or Safety.
