Work with the Engineering staff to support testing and commissioning of substation additions and modifications related to both capital projects and operations/maintenance. Work as an intern doing tasks spanning all aspects of power system protection and control; including protection system modeling, short circuit studies, automated test development, power system controls design review, and various analytical tasks to support regulatory compliance requirements. Through practical field experience and mentoring, successful candidate will gain significant knowledge, professional confidence, and people skills. Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to: Assist engineers with daily tasks that include the following Commissioning test plan creation. Power system analysis using software tools. Work in lab running various relay tests. Field visits with engineers to learn commissioning practices. Commissioning documentation management. This position is for a May 24, 2027 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel Energy’s business needs.

Requirements

  • Current student, Freshman or higher
  • Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Electrical or Power Systems Engineering
  • Travel to project sites within the service area to observe commissioning activities.
  • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the school year (up to 20 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in-person, per our hybrid work policy.

Nice To Haves

  • Coursework in power systems preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively; both written and verbally
  • Must be self- motivated, have good mechanical aptitude, and ability to work well with others
  • Able to commit to the internship for a year or longer
  • Willingness to work in field and in office
