About The Position

This position can be performed remotely for candidates who reside in the Milwaukee, WI area with preference for those able to work one day on-site per week. In this role, you will be able to join a successful underwriting team and direct your own career path! This role completes underwriting trainings including online learning modules, corporate training, and peer training sessions. You will shadow experienced underwriters to learn company and regional middle market risk appetite, underwriting resources and systems, and gain experience in developing agency relationships. Under supervision, you will evaluate basic accounts for risk selection, coverage offerings, and pricing purposes within limited authority. This role also analyzes information to underwrite policies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in insurance or business administration, or equivalent relevant experience
  • Candidates that exceed the minimum qualifications may be considered for a higher level position.

Nice To Haves

  • Insurance designations, such as AINS, AU, CIC or CPCU preferred
  • One year of experience in commercial lines underwriting or related experience (for Commercial Underwriter II)
  • Insurance designations, such as AINS, AU, CIC, or CPCU preferred (for Commercial Underwriter II)
  • Knowledge of commercial insurance products and coverage options preferred
  • Good problem-solving and analytical skills and the ability to make sound decisions
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Ability to work effectively with others, as well as independently
  • Ability to maintain high standards of professional competence
  • Good computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office and social media
  • Ability to work on multiple projects while meeting deadlines
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Good negotiating skills preferred

Responsibilities

  • Shadows experienced underwriters to learn company and regional middle market risk appetite and gain experience in developing agency relationships.
  • Consults experienced underwriters to ask questions and gain understanding in underwriting best practices.
  • Supports underwriting team by completing tasks, such as reviewing endorsements within authority limit and analyzing assigned new and renewal accounts.
  • Under supervision, evaluates basic middle market accounts for risk selection and pricing purposes within limited authority.
  • Analyzes exposure, company and regional risk appetite, account premium and loss history, financial data, line(s) of business, price guidance, motor vehicle records, online sources of information, reports from premium audit or risk improvement and other relevant information to underwrite policies.
  • Maintains proper file documentation in connection with accounts.
  • Communicates with agents and provides updates on accounts.
  • Collaborates with marketing representatives to learn about building relationships and providing agents with good customer experiences, responsiveness, and ensuring they select EMC as their insurer of choice.
  • Attends peer training sessions, corporate workshops, and learning courses to enhance underwriting knowledge and skills.
