About The Position

This position is responsible for serving as a key partner to the Relationship Manager (RM), acting as a liaison among clients, the line of business, credit approvers, and internal stakeholders. The Commercial Portfolio Manager (CPM) helps protect bank capital and client relationships by actively supporting the deal process through credit structuring recommendations, underwriting leadership with the RM, risk evaluation, navigation of internal processes, and loan documentation negotiation and review. Role can be moved to a Senior Portfolio Manager role if knowledge and experience is consistent with bank requirements.

Requirements

  • Advanced knowledge of C&I lending, credit analysis, and risk management principles.

  • Advanced analytical skills with an understanding of financial statements and tax returns including an understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Ability to evaluate and advise on credit risk, deal structure, covenants, collateral, and guarantor support.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly explain financial and credit concepts to Relationship Mangers and Clients.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment, prioritize competing deadlines, and manage multiple relationships and transactions.
  • Ability to interact effectively with clients and all levels of bank management in a professional and consultative manner.
  • Ability to participate in presentations to clients and stakeholders, in both in-person and virtual settings.
  • Knowledge of LaserPro and attorney prepared loan documents and experience with negotiating them.
  • Knowledge of compliance with federal regulations pertaining to commercial banking
  • Ability to research and understand commercial and commercial real estate lending and banking regulations
  • Specifically, use personal car for customer calls and site visits. For site visits, may need to walk in wet, muddy and slippery conditions and walk through hazardous conditions of a job site
  • Ability to maintain predictable and reliable attendance.
  • Ability to complete the required training by assigned due date.
  • Minimum of 5 years of commercial banking, commercial credit, portfolio management, and/or underwriting experience required.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of a bank or third-party formal credit training preferred.
  • Specific expertise in credit decisions and understanding of credit risk thresholds and managing credit risk is strongly preferred.
  • Formal credit training preferred

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with Relationship Managers to independently evaluate, advise, and structure new, existing, and complex credit opportunities.
  • Acts as a seasoned credit product advisor to Relationship Managers and clients regarding loan structures, covenant design, collateral support, guarantor strength, and policy/risk appetite considerations.
  • Interprets credit policy and advises internal partners.
  • Leads credit discussions, including evaluation of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats, and relevant industry or other considerations.
  • Prepares or oversees preparation of clear, concise, and decision-ready credit memoranda and proposals for approvers.
  • Manages a portfolio of accounts in partnership with Relationship Managers.
  • Communicates directly with clients regarding credit events, financial position, and actions as needed, serving as second contact and strategic advisor to Relationship Managers and assigned portfolio of clients and prospects.
  • Identifies emerging risks and ensures risk ratings are evaluated accurately and proactively.
  • Advises clients, RMs, and approvers on issues arising during portfolio management efforts.
  • Drives portfolio management cadences on a proactive basis, including collection, processing, and completion of financial statement, borrowing base and covenant tracking items, management of renewal and annual review processes, and ongoing evaluation of risk grades.
  • Leads underwriting efforts for prospective and existing clients in collaboration with Relationship Managers and Credit Analysts.
  • Presents and defends credit recommendations to Loan Committee/approvers.
  • Exercises discretion and independent judgment in an analytical capacity by independently underwriting loans with minimal supervision needed - completing informative, well thought out and concise written analysis of the applicant’s ability to repay the loan and assess the strengths & weaknesses of the Bank’s repayment sources in light of industry and other environmental trends.
  • Identifies, documents, and mitigates Policy exceptions.
  • Ensures adequate completion of individual monthly Problem Asset Reports for loans risk rated Special Mention (“5”) or worse to ensure completeness and accuracy including: Risk rating rationale, nonaccrual & TDR determination, reserve & impairment discussion, cash flow analysis, collateral analysis,
  • Reviews and negotiates loan documents in partnership with Relationship Managers, ensuring consistency with approvals and prudent evaluation of documentation risk.
  • Partners with internal and external counsel and loan operations to resolve client requests and internal/external issues.
  • Works with Loan Assistants and Loan Operations Staff to navigate through closing processes and ensure compliance with bank operations and credit standards.
  • Generates and reviews term sheets and commitment letters.
  • Demonstrates leadership as an individual contributor by sharing knowledge, modeling high standards, fostering accountability, and promoting open communication.
  • Reviews, critiques and refines analyst work and narratives while ensuring Bank standards are met.
