About The Position

The Commercial Lines Underwriter performs functions to review, evaluate, and analyze risk coverage for commercial lines liability insurance while acquiring business that is profitable for the company.

Requirements

  • General knowledge of insurance theory, contracts, coverages and rating principles.
  • Strong written and oral communications skills.
  • High level of organizational, analytical and listening skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for dealing with other associates, agents and other outside contacts.
  • Ability to negotiate, persuade, influence and deal with adversarial situations.
  • Ability to concentrate for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to operate a PC and various office equipment.
  • College degree with a major in business, marketing or other related area or a minimum of three (3) years of previous underwriting experience in similar environment.
  • Continuing insurance education (i.e., IIA etc.)

Responsibilities

  • Reviews commercial lines applications for new insurance, renewal or changes and evaluates for coverage; analyzes level of risk and proceeds appropriately.
  • Gathers, collects and compiles any additional information necessary and determines whether to approve or decline coverage.
  • Uses facts and information to price commercial coverages according to relative levels of risk; also develops quotes.
  • Processes applications and notifies agent of those that are declined.
  • Maintains in contact with agents to discuss accounts for which the company is carrying coverage.
  • Services the agency force as a main contact regarding underwriting and coverage questions.
  • Meets with agents to further build a positive relationship with the agency force and generate additional business.
  • Trains new associates and assists less experienced underwriting associates in understanding coverages and analyzing risks.
  • Performs various administrative activities to maintain records, tracks activities, and prepares various reports.
  • Provides input in development of new products.
  • Attends seminars to keep abreast of related changes in the industry.
  • Assists other commercial lines underwriters with workloads as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
