About The Position

South Shore Insurance Underwriters (SSIU) is looking for an Associate Underwriter to support our growing underwriting team across Personal and Commercial Lines. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys problem-solving, relationship building, and making thoughtful decisions in a fast-paced environment. As an Associate Underwriter, you’ll help evaluate risk, support quoting and policy decisions, and work closely with agents and internal teams to deliver a high-quality experience. This position plays an important role in balancing profitability, accuracy, and customer service while continuing to grow underwriting knowledge and technical skills. At SSIU, we empower our underwriting team to think critically, collaborate closely, and continuously improve how we serve our agents and partners.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Risk Management, Finance, or a related field preferred
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Exposure to insurance, underwriting, or risk management concepts preferred
  • Open to individuals looking to grow their insurance knowledge and underwriting career
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Outlook, Word, and Excel
  • Strong analytical thinking and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-moving environment
  • Comfortable making decisions and solving problems with guidance and support
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating closely with a team
  • Adaptable and flexible when priorities shift

Responsibilities

  • Review and evaluate risks with support and guidance from the underwriting team
  • Assist with quoting, risk analysis, and underwriting decisions in accordance with company guidelines
  • Help ensure pricing and coverage decisions align with profitability goals and underwriting strategy
  • Maintain compliance with underwriting guidelines and regulatory requirements
  • Deliver prompt, professional, and relationship-focused service to retail agents
  • Educate agents on appetite, coverage, and underwriting philosophy
  • Build relationships with agency partners through phone, email, and occasional field visits
  • Support operational efficiency and process improvement initiatives
  • Collaborate with teammates across departments to support business goals and service standards
