Commercial Lead, Energy Markets

American Terawatt
Hybrid

About The Position

American Terawatt is building a new industrial electric grid for the United States, requiring national-scale power development and a deep understanding of market conditions. The company designs and deploys advanced power transmission systems, serving large industrial loads like AI datacenters and automated manufacturing. Their unique HVDC terminals are standardized, modular, and integrate energy storage, designed to operate as nodes on a future HVDC transmission network. The Energy Markets Lead will play a crucial role in modeling the value of transmission development, identifying opportunities, and contributing to the company's network strategy.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated professional experience in energy analysis, energy GTM, or capacity/resource planning for an energy developer, utility, IPP, consultancy, hyperscaler, or similar.
  • Analysis should have contributed significantly to budgetary decisions.
  • Strong quantitative modeling skills: fluent in building and maintaining financial/market models.
  • Ability to wrangle messy public and proprietary data programmatically (Python, SQL, or equivalent).
  • Familiarity with US wholesale power markets and the interconnection process (ISO/RTO market design, LMPs and congestion, generator interconnection queue, cluster studies, FERC Order 2023).
  • Understanding of utility and ISO/RTO tariff filings and rates.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with renewables, storage, and other heterogeneous power resources.
  • Experience with datacenter or large industrial load development and power procurement (hyperscaler demand, co-location / behind-the-meter structures).
  • Transmission economics and planning, ideally including HVDC; nodal/congestion or basis analysis.
  • Transmission interconnection submissions, utility transmission RFP responses.
  • Commercial exposure to PPAs, offtake or tolling structures, and development-stage risk modeling.
  • Programming/analytics depth (Python data stack, GIS/geospatial for siting) and building analytical processes from scratch in an early-stage environment.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain a market model of the value of American Terawatt transmission development, integrating data on datacenter capacity, generation interconnection filings, industrial development, turbine orders, transmission queues, permit filings, financing announcements, load forecasts, and utility grid congestion.
  • Build and maintain a system to identify and maintain a portfolio of specific transmission development opportunities by tracking demand vs. generation capacity and matching stranded generation with loads.
  • Identify target generation partnership opportunities (greenfield and existing/curtailed) and propose links to data centers or other large loads.
  • Identify target large loads and propose links to stranded generation to accelerate cost and/or schedule.
  • Assemble the sizing, siting, and commercial context for each opportunity for evaluation.
  • Contribute to the risk modeling of identified opportunities with development and engineering teams.
  • Perform desktop preliminary diligence on opportunities and partners, highlighting risks, opportunities, and tradeoffs.
  • Model the commercial impact of individual link development as part of the broader network strategy.
  • Identify how planned or in-progress links create opportunities for network expansion and improved value.
  • Build repeatable processes for gathering and cleaning public and proprietary data, including ISO/RTO interconnection queues, forecasts, utility resource plans, OEM order books, and direct outreach.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation package commensurate with experience, including salary and material equity participation.
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage, including 75% coverage for dependents and spouses.
  • Up to $300/month reimbursement for gym and wellness expenses, or Bay Club membership for SF-based employees.
  • Lunch provided daily when working from an office.
  • Unlimited PTO with manager approval.
  • Company-wide office closures for July 4 week and one week in December.
  • Laptop of choice provided.
  • Convenient SF office near the Embarcadero and public transit (pre-tax transit benefit).
  • Employee contribution 401(k) program.
