About The Position

Peterson Power Systems has a need for a Commercial Engine Lead CVA Technician at our Hillsboro, OR location. This role involves maintaining a safe working environment, promoting contamination control, and communicating positively with customers. The technician will work overtime as needed and travel, including overnight stays and overseas travel, to meet customer service requirements. They will also be on call for customer service needs during evenings, weekends, and holidays. The role requires adherence to manufacturer and company field service guidelines for quality work and accurate failure analysis. The technician will attend scheduled technical and safety training, which may be in person or online. This position requires performing field service operations with little to no supervision, including analyzing and diagnosing equipment malfunctions, pre-delivery setup, installation, and start-up of Caterpillar engines, generators (primarily in marine applications), and related products. This includes Level 1 and Level 2 generator system service, and repair, replacement, or rebuilding of engines and related system components for Cat and Non-Cat products in Industrial, Marine, and EPG applications. The technician will also assist electric power field technicians, write service reports, and prepare required documentation. This role involves backing up the Field Service Supervisor and/or Service Manager on larger jobs, problem situations, job estimates, and for vacations/meetings. Providing technical support and on-the-job training (OJT) for other technicians in the field is also a key responsibility, as is assisting the Service Manager with performance evaluations and feedback. The technician will track large or special customer jobs through the repair process, ensuring timely completion, accurate parts ordering, and correct repairs. They will keep the Service Manager informed of daily field operations and potential problem situations. Maintaining an ongoing customer service relation business plan with the Service Manager and Service Supervisor, and ensuring field technicians understand their customer service responsibilities, is crucial. The role includes overseeing work-in-process, testing, and final preparation for delivery of repaired products. Reporting lost, broken, or stolen equipment and providing written recommendations for tooling and equipment improvements to the Service Manager are also required. The technician will solicit information regarding engine system sales and service opportunities and pass this information to the appropriate sales staff. Attendance at store meetings to review service reports, flat rates, service updates, policies, problem areas, parts inventory, training, communications, and working relationships is expected. Finally, ensuring assigned company vehicles are clean, professional, and in proper working order, and operating vehicles as needed for customer visits, are part of the role. Maintaining punctual, regular, and predictable attendance, a positive working environment, and supporting company safety and housekeeping standards are essential.

Requirements

  • Associate’s Degree from a fully accredited college or technical/vocational school in Diesel Technology or other closely related fields; and a minimum of 6 years of directly related experience in power generation or commercial engine service; or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.
  • A drug screen and background check is required.

Responsibilities

  • Travel is required to meet customer service requirements including overnight stays, overseas and out of territory travel.
  • Be on call to respond to customer service needs during the evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Follow manufacturer and company field service guidelines and procedures to ensure quality work and to preserve and document component failure information for accurate failure analysis.
  • Perform inspection on equipment as needed.
  • Attend scheduled technical training, and safety training. This training may be in person or online (virtual).
  • Perform the following field service operations with little to no supervision: Analyze and diagnose equipment malfunctions.
  • Pre-delivery setup, installation, and start-up on all makes and models of Caterpillar engines, generators (primary in marine applications), and related products.
  • Level 1 and Level 2 generator system service.
  • Repair, replace or rebuild engines and related system components, fuel systems, generator control systems, switchgear, marine power systems, etc. – Cat and Non-Cat products in Industrial, Marine, and EPG applications.
  • Assist electric power field technicians, as required.
  • Write service reports that accurately document diagnosis and repairs performed.
  • Prepare required documentation including work orders, parts lists, and timecards in an accurate and timely manner to enable other employees to do their job in a timely manner.
  • Back up Field Service Supervisor and/or service manager on larger jobs, problem situations, and problem-solving and/or job estimates beyond flat rates. As well as back up for vacations, meeting, etc.
  • Provide technical support and OJT for other technicians in the field.
  • Assist Service Manager with performance evaluations and feedback of observations of technicians in the field.
  • Open and Close all shop work orders with-in 7 days from LDL.
  • Track large or special customer jobs through repair process to insure they are completed in a timely manner, parts are ordered properly, repairs are done accurately, and safe.
  • Responsible to keep service manager informed and updated on daily field operations and possible problem situations, including any redo.
  • Maintain ongoing customer service relation business plan with Service Manager and Service Supervisor, ensuring field technicians are aware of their responsibility to customer service.
  • Oversee work-in-process being performed in the field, testing, and final preparation for delivery of repaired products.
  • Report lost, broken, or stolen equipment to the service manager.
  • Provide written recommendations to service manager for needed improvement for field tooling and/or equipment.
  • Solicit information regarding opportunities for engine system sales and service and pass information to engine systems sales staff and engine PSSR in a timely manner.
  • Attend store meetings in-store or via Teams to review: Completion and accuracy of service reports, Flat rates, Service updates, policies, etc., Problem areas, Parts inventory, Training, communications, and working relationships.
  • Ensure assigned company vehicles maintain a clean professional appearance and is in proper working order.
  • Operate company or personal vehicle as needed to visit branch locations or customers.
  • Maintains punctual, regular, and predictable attendance.
  • Maintain a positive working environment.
  • Support company safety and housekeeping standards.
