About The Position

Saltwater Inc. is seeking individuals passionate about fisheries and ocean data to support NOAA's Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC) Fisheries Statistics Division (FSD). This role involves collecting biological samples and data from commercial and recreational fisheries, managing and entering data into various systems, and potentially assisting with laboratory processing and public outreach. The positions are contractor roles with potential for full-time or part-time employment, located at coastal sites in the Southeastern US. The contract includes a base period and potential option periods.

Requirements

MS Degree in Marine Science or a related field of study or BS Degree in Marine Science or a related field of study plus three (3) years of relevant experience.
Knowledge of applying basic concepts, principles and methodologies of fish or related biological field sufficient to independently perform scientific tasks using standard methods and techniques.
Proficient in the use of fish, invertebrate, and protected species identification books and keys.
Computer literate and experienced with common word processing, database, statistical, and graphics programs.

Nice To Haves

Experience collecting catch and effort information from commercial or recreational fishermen.
Knowledge of collection of routine biological samples (lengths, age structures, gonads, etc.) from marine fish.

Responsibilities

Collect lengths, weights, and biological samples (primarily otoliths) from commercial fisheries catches and recreational headboat catches.
Follow established protocols for data and sample collection as defined in the Trip Interview Program (TIP) and Southeast Region Headboat Survey (SRHS) User’s Guides.
Collect data on paper forms or tablet computers provided by the government.
Enter data collected on paper forms into the Trip Interview Program System (TIPS) or SRHS web applications.
Prepare biological samples using proper cleaning, packaging, and labeling procedures.
Prepare paperwork for shipping biological samples via ground and air carriers.
Arrange for the pickup of samples with carriers.
Enter, view, and edit field data using custom data entry applications and standard database software.
Run monthly audits of data using the QA/QC tool in TIPS and address flagged protocol issues.
Proof data entry by reconciling data in systems against paper data entry forms.
Monitor the industry, submit Headboat Activity Reports (HARs) weekly, monitor vessel elogs, and communicate with vessels regarding reporting compliance if participating in SRHS.
Participate in public outreach events to explain port sampling goals and methods.
Assist with sampling training sessions for new hires or TIP Partner agencies.
Attend training sessions or conferences to acquire updates to sampling protocols and technology.
