About The Position

The Commercial Manager will lead a dynamic team of underwriters in building and maintaining a profitable, well-managed book of commercial business. In this role, you'll play a key part in shaping and executing underwriting strategies, ensuring that our processes are efficient, accurate, and aligned with our company’s guidelines and risk appetite. We're looking for a forward-thinking leader who is technically strong and excited by innovation. In this position you will collaborate closely with senior leadership and cross-functional teams to help drive a fresh, data-driven approach to underwriting, leveraging proprietary algorithms and advanced data mining techniques to assess risk and deliver fair, risk-appropriate premiums. This position is a 100% remote U.S. based opportunity that can be based in one of the following states only: AL, AZ, FL, GA, KY, LA, MA, MO, NC, NJ, NY, OR, PA, SC, TX, UT, VA, WA, WI. Some travel for day-to-day work, team meetings, and training will be required.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience as an Underwriter in the commercial insurance space.
  • 5+ years of experience handling coastal catastrophe risks.
  • 2+ years of experience leading a team of underwriters.
  • Strong knowledge of commercial lines of business.
  • Previous experience working as an Underwriter for an MGA or carrier.
  • Proven ability to lead high-performing teams and drive strategic initiatives.
  • Familiarity with predictive analytics, data science tools, or underwriting automation platforms.
  • Experience working in an agile, cross-functional environment involving product, actuarial, and data science teams.
  • Proven ability to scale teams, build talent pipelines, and implement effective training and development programs.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.
  • MS Office environment (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Experience using video and chat technology (MSTeams & Slack)
  • Reliable high-speed internet connectivity required.
  • Designated quiet work from home space.

Nice To Haves

  • Producer license preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Design and execute underwriting strategies that drive profitable growth while ensuring strong, risk-adjusted returns.
  • Establish and oversee underwriting guidelines, pricing models, and risk selection standards to ensure consistency and sound decision-making.
  • Monitor and evaluate portfolio performance, underwriting KPIs, and loss trends to identify opportunities for improvement and optimize results.
  • Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing team of commercial underwriters, ensuring alignment with company goals and fostering professional growth.
  • Conduct quarterly quality assurance audits, assess underwriting accuracy and compliance, and present actionable insights to senior leadership.
