About The Position

The Commercial Underwriting department is responsible for selecting, classifying and underwriting all commercial policy risks that support our goals of growth and profitability according to FBFS policy and procedures. The Commercial Account Underwriter I is responsible for reviewing new business applications. Requests exceeding the position’s approval limits need to be referred to or handled under the guidance and approval of the Commercial Underwriting Manager.

Requirements

  • College degree with three years of insurance experience required.
  • Required skills include customer service, team orientation, interpersonal and technical/business/industry regulations related skills.
  • Must have excellent problem solving, analytical and organizational skills.
  • Must keep up-to-date regarding local, state and federal rules and regulations to insure government compliance and meet company guidelines.
  • Ability to work under pressure and shift priorities to achieve corporate and business unit goals.
  • Must be able to meet deadlines.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and maintain a clean driving record according to Fleet Safety guidelines.
  • Oral and written communication skills as appropriate to this position.
  • Ability to read, write and speak the English language.
  • Reasonably regular and predictable attendance.

Responsibilities

  • Review, evaluate, and underwrite commercial renewal business in accordance with company guidelines, authority levels, and profitability objectives, while identifying opportunities to enhance account profitability through pricing strategies, coverage adjustments, risk management recommendations, and corrective action plans.
  • Apply underwriting judgment and company guidelines to support profitable risk selection.
  • Review and approve policy changes, endorsements, and account revisions within delegated authority.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with agency partners and key stakeholders.
  • Communicate underwriting decisions, account strategies, pricing changes, and coverage recommendations effectively.
  • Partner with agents to improve account retention while maintaining underwriting discipline.
  • Monitor account-level and portfolio-level profitability metrics, including loss ratios, retention, premium growth, and rate adequacy.
  • Support achievement of departmental and organizational retention and profitability goals.
  • Identify trends and exposures affecting portfolio results and recommend corrective actions.
  • Perform other job-related duties or special projects as assigned.
  • Pursue ongoing professional development, including progress toward the Associate in Insurance (AINS) designation, the Associate in Underwriting (AU) designation or Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) certification.
