About The Position

Performs inspections of commercial structures and residential, single-family detached structures for compliance with applicable codes and ordinances. Receives guidance regarding overall mission and unusual priorities, but may set work methods and timetables. Inspects the quality of work in the construction, alteration, or repair of commercial, industrial, and residential buildings, and other structures including foundations, cement, framing, and plastering; checks plumbing, heating, and electrical installation, including fixtures and appliances; inspects stud, joist, rafter spacing, and other structural member factors; examines the grade, treatment, and quality of building materials. Evaluates the quality of materials and work relative to applicable building codes, ordinances, regulations, and approved plans; issues notices to identify corrections required for compliance or to stop work on projects. Responds to verbal and written inquiries from architects, contractors, builders, City personnel, and the general public; interprets, applies, and explains requirements and restrictions related to building codes, ordinances, regulations, policies, and procedures; develops alternative methods for compliance with requirements and restrictions. May assist with scheduling appointments and reviewing and approving plans in compliance with building codes, ordinances and regulations. Selects from multiple procedures and methods to accomplish tasks. Applies organizational policies. May interpret organizational policies and recommend exceptions. Has supervisory authority over work group (typically at least four to five employees) to include discipline, performance management, scheduling, training, etc.

Requirements

Thorough knowledge of International Code Council Building codes, related federal, state, and local laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
Thorough knowledge of building tools and materials.
Thorough knowledge of methods of building construction.
Thorough knowledge of safety methods.
Thorough knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of building inspection.
Ability to read, interpret, apply, and explain building plans, blueprints, specifications, and building codes.
Ability to make mathematical calculations rapidly and accurately.
Ability to use word processing and other related computer software programs.
Ability to prepare and maintain complete, accurate, and concise reports and records.
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely verbally and in writing.
Ability to exercise initiative making recommendations to management.
Ability to communicate effectively with individuals from various socioeconomic, ethnic and culturally diverse backgrounds.
Ability to establish and maintain effective and positive working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Ability to work independently and organize and prioritize work.
Proficiency in safely operating office equipment including computers.
High school diploma or GED.
Two (2) years of experience in building trades; OR an equivalent combination of closely related education, training, and work experience.
Must have a minimum of four (4) of the following certifications: Residential Building Inspector from the International Code Council (ICC); Residential Plumbing Inspector from the ICC or from the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO); Residential Mechanical Inspector from the ICC or IAPMO; and Residential Electrical Inspector from the ICC or International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI).
Commercial Building Inspector certification.
Commercial Mechanical Inspector certification.
Commercial Plumbing Inspector certification.
Commercial Electrical Inspector certification.

Nice To Haves

Three years on the job construction experience preferred.
