About The Position

This position involves inspecting various buildings to ensure compliance with building codes and other ordinances. Responsibilities include maintaining detailed inspection records, addressing inquiries and complaints from the public and professionals, preparing cases for the Building and Standards Commission regarding dangerous structures, and staying updated on code changes, construction trends, and inspection innovations. The role requires working in both an office setting and conducting on-site inspections.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent
Two years of inspections or related experience
Strong construction background in areas such as framing, electrical, plumbing or construction management may be accepted in lieu of inspections experience
Must have, or obtain within a specified timeframe, International Building, Residential and Energy Conservation Code certifications
Valid Class C Texas driver’s license

Nice To Haves

TDLR electrical license preferred (if hired at lower range as Building Inspector, will primarily conduct electrical inspections)
Bilingual (English / Spanish) skills beneficial
To be hired as, or advance to the higher pay range, must acquire within a specified timeframe, a State of Texas Plumbing Inspector license, International Plumbing Code certification and other applicable licenses and certifications.

Responsibilities

Inspecting a variety of buildings for compliance with building codes and other ordinances
Maintaining detailed written records of inspections
Responding to questions and complaints from the public, city staff, contractors, architects and engineers
Preparing cases about dangerous structures to present to the Building and Standards Commission
Studying code and ordinance changes, attending educational seminars, and staying current with construction trends and inspection procedural innovations
