About The Position

Children’s Hospital Colorado is a leading pediatric healthcare system, recognized nationally for excellence in clinical care, research, education, quality, and patient safety. It is the primary pediatric teaching hospital for the University of Colorado School of Medicine, closely integrated with the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. The Colorado Springs campus, opened in 2019, is southern Colorado's first full-service pediatric hospital, offering advanced pediatric and neonatal care to a seven-state region. This facility includes inpatient beds, a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), a Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, and specialized pediatric services. The Division of Pediatric Surgery at the University of Colorado School of Medicine is seeking a full-time (1.0 FTE) Pediatric General Surgery Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) at the rank of Instructor. This role will provide inpatient and outpatient medical and surgical care services at Children’s Hospital Colorado in Colorado Springs, under the direction of full-time faculty.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with a Master’s degree in Nursing and/or a graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
  • Current license to practice as a Nurse Practitioner and/or Physician Assistant with prescriptive privileges.
  • For Nurse Practitioner candidates, an acute care certification is required.
  • Meet and maintain specific requirements of the Nursing Credential Review Board (Nurse Practitioner) and the Medical Review Board (Physician Assistant).
  • Current ATLS or successful completion within three months of hire.
  • Current BLS prior to hire and PALS certifications at time of or within three months of hire.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States without requiring sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in general surgery, trauma, critical care, and pediatrics.
  • First assist or surgical assist certification and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide independent clinical services primarily for General Pediatric Surgical patients at Children’s Hospital Colorado-Colorado Springs.
  • Perform inpatient and some outpatient clinical duties related to a full spectrum of general pediatric surgical patients, with a focus on trauma and neonatal care.
  • Conduct initial patient assessments and consults.
  • Respond to trauma activations.
  • Perform primary and secondary surveys and manage trauma patients comprehensively.
  • Round on hospitalized patients.
  • Complete clinical documentation, including daily notes, history and physicals, and discharge summaries.
  • Educate patients.
  • Coordinate multi-disciplinary care.
  • Act as first assist in the Operating Room (OR).
  • Provide outpatient clinic care.
  • Perform minor procedures.
  • Collaborate closely with pediatric general surgeons, sub-specialty surgeons, emergency medicine physicians, intensivists, and hospital medicine teams.
  • Professionally interact with referring physicians, staff, emergency medical personnel, and primary care providers.
  • Provide care in the pediatric unit, pediatric intensive care unit, newborn intensive care unit, acute care areas, and outpatient clinics.
  • Participate in 24/7 APP coverage, including days, in-house overnight, weekends, and holiday coverage.
