About The Position

The Collision Paint Prepper plays a key role in the OEM certified collision center by preparing vehicles and components for high-quality refinishing. This position ensures all panels are properly sanded, masked, primed, and cleaned prior to paint application. Working closely with Paint Technicians, Body Technicians, and the Production team, the Paint Prepper supports efficient workflow, maintains OEM refinishing standards, and contributes to exceptional repair quality and customer satisfaction.

Requirements

  • 1–2+ years of refinishing preparation experience in a collision center or automotive refinishing environment preferred.
  • Strong understanding of sanding, masking, priming, and general refinish preparation processes.
  • Ability to identify surface defects and correct them prior to painting.
  • Experience with sanding tools, prep equipment, and refinishing materials.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to producing quality work.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively within a production team.
  • Familiarity with OEM refinishing standards or ICAR Refinish training is an asset.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all refinishing preparation steps, including sanding, scuffing, featheredging, masking, and cleaning surfaces.
  • Apply primer and surfacer materials according to OEM and paint system procedures.
  • Inspect repaired areas for defects and communicate any issues that may affect paint quality.
  • Prepare panels for blending and refinishing, ensuring proper adhesion and surface uniformity.
  • Maintain proper masking techniques to protect nonpainted surfaces and prevent overspray.
  • Work closely with Paint Technicians to stage vehicles and components for paint booth scheduling.
  • Assist with mixing primers, sealers, and other materials as directed by the Paint Technician or Paint Department Lead.
  • Clean and maintain prep equipment, sanding tools, and designated work areas.
  • Follow all safety procedures, including PPE use, hazardous material handling, and ventilation guidelines.
  • Support overall production workflow by communicating parts status, repair progress, and potential delays.
  • Participate in ongoing training for OEM refinishing procedures and technical refinishing skills.
  • All other duties as assigned by leadership.
