About The Position

This full-time, 10-month, tenure-track faculty position is responsible for providing comprehensive mental health services to students across multiple Hutchinson Community College (HutchCC) locations, including Hutchinson, Newton, and McPherson Outreach. The role involves personal counseling, crisis intervention, support for emotional well-being, and life skills development to promote student wellness, academic success, and retention. Additionally, the position will coordinate student food pantries at Outreach locations, teach assigned classes, and provide academic, career, and financial aid advising. Collaboration with retention efforts and participation in campus outreach activities are also key components of this role. The position is supervised by the Coordinator of Counseling and Social Work Services.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, Psychology, Social Work, Professional Counseling or related area.
  • Kansas licensure through the Kansas Behavioral Science Regulatory Board to diagnose and treat mental disorders.
  • Ability to build solid student relationships while adjusting to a multitude of situations in the college environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work with staff, administration, and others in a professional manner.
  • Visual acuity to view a computer terminal.
  • Appropriate judgment and application of tact and courtesy in difficult situations.
  • Ability to understand words and respond effectively and appropriately.
  • Ability to learn and comprehend basic instructions about the position.
  • Physical and mental qualifications must be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.

Nice To Haves

  • Teaching and/or mental health counseling experience preferred.
  • Counselor is required to secure and pay for external supervision if clinical licensure has not been obtained.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive mental health services for all Hutchinson Community College (HutchCC) students, including those at the Newton and McPherson Outreach locations.
  • Conduct personal counseling, crisis intervention, and support for emotional well-being.
  • Perform diagnostic and ongoing assessments to inform appropriate treatment plans.
  • Utilize multiple delivery systems for counseling, including face-to-face, telephone, and online communication.
  • Support students in developing life skills to promote personal wellness, academic success, and retention.
  • Coordinate with the Counseling and Social Work Services Coordinator to plan, manage, and oversee daily operations of student food pantries at Outreach locations.
  • Teach select classes, as assigned, by the Coordinator of Counseling and Social Work Services with cooperation from Outreach Center Coordinator, utilizing face-to-face and online delivery methods. Classes may include ED105 – Success Seminar/College Orientation, ED115 – College Orientation and Career Exploration, SO103 – Stress Management, and/or SO104 – Assertiveness Training.
  • Attend the New Faculty Teaching Academy.
  • Provide academic, career, and financial aid advising to undeclared and at-risk students.
  • Collaborate with HutchCC Retention Coordinator and Outreach team to implement retention procedures and strategies.
  • Assist with campus outreach, fairs, screening events, and celebrations.
  • Maintain resource materials related to academic advising and mental health counseling.
  • Arrive on time for work, attend work regularly, and successfully complete the responsibilities of the position.
  • Comply with HutchCC policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Coordinator of Counseling and Social Work Services.
  • Travel between Hutchinson, Newton, and McPherson locations.
  • Satisfy the duties of a Campus Security Authority (CSA) relating to the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (“Clery Act”), which includes reporting crimes, completing training, assisting with timely warnings, serving as a resource, and collaborating on campus safety issues. Note: A professional counselor may be exempt from reporting Clery Act crimes when functioning within the scope of their license or certification.
