About The Position

The College and Career Advisor(s) supports high school seniors at assigned campus(es) as they explore, identify, and successfully transition into postsecondary opportunities after graduation. Working closely with students, the advisor provides individualized guidance based on each student’s interests, goals, and abilities to help them pursue pathways that may include a four-year university, community college, technical or vocational training, military service, or direct entry into the workforce. The College and Career Advisor is embedded within the high school setting and collaborates closely with campus administrators, counselors, teachers, and other staff to ensure students receive comprehensive support throughout the college and career planning process. In addition to serving students during the academic year, the advisor provides summer transition support to graduating seniors, helping them navigate enrollment, financial aid, employment, military enlistment, or other postsecondary requirements to ensure a successful bridge from high school to their chosen pathway.

Requirements

  • Must possess a minimum of a bachelor’s degree, preferably a former secondary teacher
  • Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Must be an innovative self-starter with a passion for helping students
  • Be well organized and thorough
  • Be able to work well with little supervision
  • Deal professionally and courteously with a diverse student and parent population, as well as employees of various colleges, the assigned school district(s), and external resource organizations/institutions
  • Have general skills in keyboarding and computer usage
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
  • This is a 12-month position

Responsibilities

  • Provide individualized college and career advising to high school seniors.
  • Assist students with postsecondary planning, applications, enrollment processes, and career exploration.
  • Support students in accessing financial aid, scholarships, and other postsecondary resources.
  • Collaborate with school staff, families, and community partners to promote student success.
  • Track student progress and maintain accurate records of advising activities and outcomes.
  • Continue working with graduates during the summer transition period to support successful postsecondary enrollment, employment, military entry, or training program participation.
  • Meeting 1:1 with each senior to discuss plans after graduation
  • Working in senior classes to complete financial aid applications, etc.
  • Providing educational planning and career exploration/information, including dual credit opportunities, to a diverse high school student population through structured individual and group meetings and advising sessions
  • Assisting students with the development and updating of a realistic career pathway—with going to college, enlisting in the military, or joining the workforce directly after graduation
  • Developing activities, events, and outreach efforts to promote student and parent engagement with the services available
  • Taking seniors to area college tours/industry tours, college fairs, etc.
  • Coordinating closely with appropriate high school personnel
  • Conducting intrusive advising services to motivate and encourage students, track their progress toward enrollment in the first semester of college, and connect them with needed internal and external resources
  • Assisting students with college admissions and financial aid application processes
  • Working with appropriate resource persons to provide students with information about post-secondary institutions and courses/programs
  • Keeping abreast of current education practices
  • Participating in the registration, student orientation, and other college activities during the summer months and as requested
  • Participate in required advisor training throughout the school year
