The Transportation Planning and Management Division (TPM) is responsible for the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods on the City's streets, supporting the larger goals of economic and social vitality for people living, working, and doing business in New York City. The Division’s responsibilities include planning, street design, technical analysis, signs, transit development, freight mobility and markings, ensuring the safety of motor vehicle occupants, pedestrians, and cyclists. Traffic Control & Engineering is seeking an intern for its Street Name Signs (SNS) Unit to support citywide sign condition assessments, work order development, and contract coordination efforts. The selected candidate will perform systematic reviews of roadway intersections using a combination of mapping tools, street-level imagery, and internal databases (including SIMS) to evaluate existing street name signage conditions. This includes identifying missing, damaged, vandalized, improperly mounted, or non-compliant signs, as well as detecting outdated signage that does not meet current standards, including retro-reflectivity requirements (e.g., TIII material compliance). Under supervision, the intern will gain exposure to the operational workflow of a municipal signage program, including inspection planning, contractor coordination, and compliance tracking.
