About The Position

The Collections Curator is responsible for management and care of the collection for the NC Maritime Museum at Southport. This position oversees proper storage, documentation, and receipt of objects for the museum’s collection. This position reports to the Museum Site Manager and supports the work as a team member with the Collections Manager at Beaufort to plan for the care of the larger Maritime Collection. This position also serves as a member of the exhibition team. This position submits yearly budgets for collections care and has knowledgeable of museum standards and best practices. The mission of the North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport is to collect, preserve, and interpret material culture pertinent to the maritime history of the Lower Cape Fera region. The North Carolina Museum of History Division promotes the understanding of the history and material culture of North Carolina for the educational benefit of North Carolinians. Through collections and historical Interpretation, its museums encourage citizens and visitors to explore and understand the past; to reflect on their lives and their place in history; and to preserve state, regional, and local history for future generations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Art History, Biology, Botany, Conservation, Education, History or Zoology from an appropriately accredited institution AND two years of museum or related work; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be able to work Tuesday through Saturday, 8:30am-5:30pm.
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, crouch, bend, and other forms of movement for the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.

  • Demonstrated experience processing collections objects, loans, deaccessions.
  • Demonstrated experience with collections software platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Applying museum methods regarding collections care and conservation.
  • Conducting research into historical objects.
  • Object processing includes cataloguing and condition reporting.
  • Maintaining collections’ software files.
