Cold Fusion Developer

StantecLos Angeles, CA

About The Position

Stantec is seeking an experienced, hands-on ColdFusion developer to support ongoing application maintenance, backlog delivery, and documentation and knowledge-transfer activities. The work centers on legacy ColdFusion applications that support environmental review, permitting, data management, and regulatory reporting. This is a part-time, hourly, as-needed role. The developer will fix defects, implement enhancements, help triage and document the technical backlog, and contribute to documentation and knowledge-transfer materials throughout the engagement. This role is well suited for someone who can work independently, move fluidly between hands-on coding and technical writing, and quickly understand legacy ColdFusion code they did not originally develop.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of hands-on ColdFusion/CFML development experience, including CFCs, Application.cfc, and standard ColdFusion data-access and templating patterns
  • Demonstrated experience maintaining legacy ColdFusion applications developed by others, with the ability to read, trace, and troubleshoot unfamiliar code
  • Demonstrated experience maintaining legacy ColdFusion applications you did not originally build — comfortable reading and tracing unfamiliar code
  • Strong SQL skills and experience troubleshooting relational database schemas in a production application context
  • Experience with version control systems (SVN and/or Git)
  • Ability to write clear technical documentation (architecture notes, data flow, troubleshooting guides) in addition to writing code
  • Comfortable working independently on an as-needed, variable-hours basis with limited day-to-day supervision
  • Based in the United States, with availability for periodic remote coordination during Pacific business hours
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical findings to non-technical stakeholders

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience supporting municipal, government, utility, or similarly regulated IT environments
  • Experience working across split version-control environments
  • Experience with issue-tracking platforms such as Jira, including backlog/workflow configuration
  • Background in SDLC process, requirements analysis, and object-oriented design patterns (relevant to assessing Fusebox/MVC-style ColdFusion applications)
  • Experience hardening or modernizing legacy ColdFusion applications, credential handling, SQL injection remediation, LDAP/AD integration
  • Prior experience as an independent consultant or self-directed contractor, managing multiple concurrent client priorities

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot and resolve reported defects across ColdFusion applications, including search functionality issues, Team page defects, workflow/notification failures, and reporting-impacting bugs
  • Diagnose document-retrieval issues and authentication/role-based access issues
  • Implement prioritized enhancements and usability improvements drawn from the governed backlog
  • Reproduce, fix, and validate changes in development/test environments; prepare releases for client approval and deployment
  • Document root causes and recurring patterns, distinguishing correctable application bugs from limitations rooted in the underlying ColdFusion architecture
  • Provide technical input to categorize incoming issues: defects, technical debt, enhancement requests, security findings, and modernization candidates
  • Help populate and maintain the backlog platform (Jira or equivalent) with accurate technical detail so the client and project administrator can prioritize effectively
  • Flag dependency and sequencing risks between tickets based on hands-on knowledge of the codebase
  • Validate and update system documentation, architecture, database schemas and data flows, module/workflow descriptions, and integration points against actual current system behavior
  • Reconstruct code-level documentation through direct code tracing where existing documentation is absent, outdated, or unreliable (common in legacy ColdFusion codebases of this age)
  • Contribute to user guides, support playbooks, and troubleshooting quick-reference materials
  • Participate in hands-on working sessions with client staff, using real code and recent fixes as training material
