About The Position

The Coding Educator is responsible for ongoing growth and development through participation in events such as workshops, in-service programs, and departmental meetings. This role provides care based on physical, psychological, educational, and related criteria appropriate to the age and type of the patients/customers served in their area. The Coding Educator acts as a coding resource for physicians, charge entry staff, other coders, and clinical staff. They participate in continuing education and in-service programs to maintain coding and billing skills, and communicate coding changes and updates to physicians based on department standards. This position also queries physicians and/or staff regarding incomplete or missing documentation and works resolute charge review work queues to correct coding errors, review documentation, and apply coding guidelines to ensure accurate and timely filing of charges. The role ensures service, procedure, and diagnosis codes are accurately reported and linked, assigning CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS codes based on coding guidelines. The Coding Educator queries physicians/providers when applicable, maintains productivity and aging levels based on department standards, and identifies trends in coding issues, working with the manager to educate and implement solutions. They also work follow-up work queues to review denial codes and remarks, applying coding and billing guidelines for resubmission to obtain final adjudication of claims, using coding resources like the NCCI manual, LCDs, and payor bulletins. The role maintains productivity based on department standards and works account work queues to resolve patient disputes by applying coding and billing guidelines, communicating with practice managers and/or physicians if applicable. The Coding Educator consistently utilizes coding and billing resources and reference tools, and reports identified or potential coding compliance issues to the manager and/or Coding Compliance Department in accordance with established policy and procedures, implementing findings to improve processes and workflows.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, required
  • CCS, CCS-P, CPC, or RHIT, required
  • 3+ years of outpatient coding experience
