About The Position

The City of Hampton is seeking a professional inspector to improve neighborhoods and ensure code compliance with municipal ordinances. This role is within the Community Development Department and involves conducting routine inspections and investigating complaints to uphold standards for zoning, weed and debris control, street numbers, abandoned vehicles, signs, and property/maintenance codes. The ideal candidate is a detailed, creative problem-solver who thrives in a fast-paced environment, is a versatile team player, passionate about customer service, and an effective communicator.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or GED.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of full-time regulatory experience in zoning, housing, general enforcement of ordinances, law enforcement, or a related field.
  • Certification as a property maintenance inspector within 18 months of employment (in accordance with VDHCD).
  • Valid driver's license and a satisfactory driving record based on City of Hampton criteria.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment testing for alcohol and controlled substances.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check.
  • Effective communication with internal and external customers.
  • Patience and skill in dealing with citizens on points of law and regulations.

Nice To Haves

  • Technical, vocational, or trade school courses in building construction technology or architecture.
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine inspections of an assigned district to ensure code compliance with municipal ordinances.
  • Investigate complaints from citizens regarding code violations.
  • Ensure compliance with ordinances for zoning, weed and debris control, street numbers, abandoned and inoperative vehicles, signs, and International Code Council (ICC) property/maintenance codes.
  • Improve the quality of neighborhood life and property values through enforcement of codes.
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external customers, demonstrating patience and skill in explaining regulations.
  • Respond to calls for service after normal business hours as needed (subject to call-out).
  • Serve as essential personnel during City emergency situations, potentially involving long hours and unusual schedules.
