About The Position

Outpatient coder with 2 + years' experience with ICD-10-CM diagnosis and CPT procedures for observations, same day surgery and ancillary encounters at a trauma level 1 facility. Specialities include but limited to cardiology, cardiothoracic, neurosurgery, orthopaedics, pulmonology, ENT, GI and general surgery. Must be experienced with checking CCI and medical necessity edits. Epic and 3M 360 CAC experience required. Production expectation is 5-15 CPH on average depending on the chart type. Schedule can be flexible withing reason but must be available for training the first few days for a 2-3 hours' time block during client's regular business hours, 8am-4pm PST

Requirements

  • Minimum 2–5+ years of facility-based outpatient coding experience in an acute care setting
  • Proven experience coding observation services, same-day surgery (SDS), and ancillary encounters (e.g., ED, radiology, lab, infusion, therapies)
  • Strong proficiency in ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II coding systems
  • Thorough understanding of APC assignments, OPPS reimbursement methodology, and charge capture practices
  • Solid understanding of disease processes, surgical procedures, and diagnostic services relevant to outpatient hospital settings
  • In-depth knowledge of CMS guidelines, NCCI edits, LCD/NCD policies, and outpatient coding compliance standards
  • Familiarity with observation billing rules, including correct status assignment and time-based coding considerations
  • Experience working in a high-acuity environment, preferably within a Level 1 Trauma Center
  • Ability to analyze complex cases, including multi-visit same-day encounters and bundled services
  • Sound judgment in querying providers when documentation is incomplete or unclear
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills for interaction with providers, CDI teams, auditors, and leadership
  • 2+ years experience at a trauma level 1 facility
  • 2+ years experience coding observations, same day surgery and ancillary accounts
  • Epic and 3M 360 CAC experience
  • Able to work M-F with the majority of the shift between 8a and 4p PST
  • Able to pick up new workflows and technology easily
  • Good written and verbal communication

  • Providing coding feedback and participating in education initiatives
  • Ramping up productivity in 4 weeks
  • Maintaining 95% accuracy in all coding
