About The Position

The Coder II plays a critical role in supporting Augusta Health’s mission and advancing departmental goals through measurable performance indicators and service excellence. This position contributes to a collaborative, patient-centered environment and helps drive outcomes aligned with organizational priorities. Coder II duties include reviewing clinical documentation as appropriate to extract data and accurately assign proper CPT and ICD-10-CM codes for billing. Coding requirements include evaluation and management coding and procedural coding as required. The coder II performs duties assigned that include excellent communication, accurate medical coding and data entry, and all essential duties of the department as required by the department director.

Requirements

• Education: High School Diploma or equivalent
• Licensure/Certification: CPC Certification
• Experience: Two or more years direct E/M coding experience
• Driver’s License: N/A
• Eligibility to work in the United States and meet Virginia state employment requirements
• Computer Skills such as Microsoft Word and Excel
• Knowledge of hospital based HIM/EHR systems
• Knowledge of NCI systems
• Comprehensive understanding of clinical documentation
• Comprehensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology
• Ability to manage deadlines and complete projects on time
• Ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner and develop alternative solutions
• Ability to work independently or in a group setting
• Experience in a medical office/healthcare setting
• Participate in continuing education programs per department guidelines

• Prior experience in a hospital, healthcare system, or related service-oriented environment
• Familiarity with Augusta Health’s systems, workflows, or organizational culture is a plus

Responsibilities

• Accurately assign appropriate E/M level and procedure codes for all professional fee services within accordance of the CPT and CMS guidelines
• Accurately assign appropriate diagnosis codes
• Understand and maintain education on all CPT/ICD-10/HCPCS guidelines, to include revisions, deletions, additions
• Make necessary changes to claims to ensure accurate billing regarding issues such as modifiers, place of service, proper code selection, and payer specific guidelines
• Communicate effectively with providers/office manager/auditors/billing department to ensure the highest level of service is being captured
• Review providers dictation for office and procedural visits
• Provide technical guidance to physicians and other department staff to include identifying and correcting errors, such as incomplete or missing documentation, instruction on proper code usage in accordance to guidelines, and maintaining an open line of communication at all times
