About The Position

The Coder I has responsibilities to review health care documentation to determine diagnostic codes for billing purposes. Accurately sequences codes according to departmental and AHIMA guidelines. Ensures records are coded in accurate and timely manner.

Requirements

  • AAPC or AHIMA credential within 12 months of employment.
  • One-year formal education beyond high school required.
  • Six months related experience in acute care facility.
  • Must pass the Clerical Ability Test with an overall score of 80%.
  • Typing speed of 30 WPM.
  • Previous work history that demonstrates steady attendance and punctuality is required.
  • Ability to read and communicate effectively in English.
  • Basic computer knowledge.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s or Associates Degree in Health Information Management preferred
  • Medical terminology preferred.
  • 3M Coding Software, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews charts thoroughly to ascertain all diagnosis and procedures.
  • Ensures receipt of order by physician on all ancillary tests and procedures.
  • Codes are sequenced according to coding guidelines.
  • Productivity standards are met.
  • Utilizes computerized coding system to assign proper codes.
  • Contacts responsible physician, in professional manner, if diagnosis is unclear.
  • Maintains open lines of communication with supervisor on issues concerning uncoded charts on the Delinquent Bill Report.
  • Meets quality standards of 95% or greater.
  • Reviews coding periodicals within seven days of receipt.
  • Assists in answering the telephone and taking accurate messages.
  • Communicates regularly with supervisor on problems, issues or concerns in his/her section.
  • Maintains a good working relationship within the department and other departments.
  • Willingly accepts additional assignments.
  • Familiar with the following manuals: Administrative, Departmental, Safety, Emergency Preparedness.
  • Completes annual educational requirements.
  • Reports to work on time with minimal absenteeism.
  • Consistently completes and maintains assigned duties.
  • Maintains hospital requirements on confidentiality.
  • Adheres to dress code; appearance is neat and clean.
