About The Position

The Neighborhood and Business Safety Division is looking for a Code Enforcement Officer who is committed to fostering a safe, well-maintained, and welcoming community. We’re seeking someone who can balance education with enforcement - knowing when education and voluntary compliance will achieve the best outcome, and when formal action is necessary. In this role, you’ll collaborate with businesses, property owners, and residents to promote compliance, share expertise, and uphold the standards that keep our city a premier destination to live, work, and visit. As a Code Enforcement Officer, you will independently carry out complex technical duties related to municipal code compliance and business license regulation. Typical duties include responding to reports of potential violations, conducting field investigations, informing property or business owners of violations and required corrections, and providing clear explanations of relevant codes. You may be responsible for monitoring special events, collaborating with law enforcement during nighttime investigations, engaging with high-profile individuals, and preparing detailed case materials for potential prosecution.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • One to two years of progressively responsible related experience.
  • Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Penal Code 832 (Must obtain within 6 months of hire).
  • Valid California Driver's License.

  • Fluency in Spanish or Russian.
  • Possession of an Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree.

Benefits

  • 10% increase in hourly pay for hours worked between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.
  • Holiday pay at one-and-one-half (1 ½) times the hourly rate of pay.
