About The Position

Greenwood County is seeking a dependable, professional, and motivated individual to join our team as a Code Enforcement Officer. This position is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys working with the public, spending time in the field, investigating concerns, and helping maintain the safety and appearance of our community. The Code Enforcement Officer conducts inspections and investigations involving issues such as junk and debris, overgrowth, illegal dumping, litter, property maintenance, and unsafe structures. The position responds to complaints and works to ensure compliance with applicable Greenwood County and City zoning ordinances and the Greenwood County Code of Laws.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • At least three months of experience involving customer service skills, interpretation of legal cases, and an understanding of basic construction procedures; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret regulations, procedures, and applicable ordinances.
  • Ability to prepare reports, correspondence, and other documentation.
  • Strong communication, customer service, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Comfortable working independently in both office and field environments.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and handle challenging situations appropriately.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct field inspections and investigate reported code violations.
  • Respond to complaints involving property maintenance, illegal dumping, litter, overgrowth, and other code-related concerns.
  • Evaluate and enforce requirements related to unsafe structures and property maintenance.
  • Maintain inspection schedules, violation notices, records, and other documentation.
  • Gather evidence needed to support enforcement actions and court cases.
  • Write and serve court summonses and appear in court or other judicial proceedings when necessary.
  • Assist with investigations of accidents or incidents involving County employees and property.
  • Work with County staff, other agencies, property owners, and members of the public.
