About The Position

A Code Enforcement Officer performs inspections and investigates complaints regarding the health, safety, welfare, property value, and environment of the city. The role involves regular attendance and the ability to work in an occupied environment. The officer receives, investigates, and works to resolve violations of city and state ordinances and health regulations. They patrol the city proactively to identify immediate public safety and health violations and attempt to contact residents or businesses to resolve issues during investigations. The position requires issuing various notices, scheduling follow-up actions, maintaining accurate documentation, preparing evidence for legal actions, and appearing in court as necessary. The officer must also keep their work area and tools clean, provide backup to subordinate positions, serve on committees, and perform other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Valid Texas Class C Driver's License is required.
  • Ability to assess work and manage a schedule and assets to complete task on time and within budget.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from citizens, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community in complex, stressful, or combative situations.
  • Ability to identifying and avoiding safety hazards.
  • Ability to maintain complex logs, records, and files and prepare accurate and detailed documentation of investigation findings.
  • Ability to effectively present information to management.

Nice To Haves

  • Possession of a State of Texas Code Enforcement license is preferred.
  • Possession of a State of Texas Food Handler's license is preferred.
  • Previous experience in Code Enforcement, planning and zoning, or government relations is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Receives, investigates, and works to resolve violations of city and state ordinance and health violations.
  • Patrols the city in a proactive manner to identify immediate public safety and health violations.
  • Attempts to contact the residence or business to resolve the violation while investigating.
  • Issues and posts door warning notices, notices of violations, corrective notices, orders to comply, and sends letters to property or business owners.
  • Schedules and performs all follow-up functions to gain compliance including letters, inspections, calls, meetings, negotiations to ensure compliance with city and state ordinances.
  • Maintains accurate documentation for case files that investigations, inspections, and enforcement actions.
  • Draws diagrams and illustrations, along with keeping photo documentation of violations as necessary.
  • Prepares evidence in support of legal actions taken by the City.
  • Appears in court, as necessary, and gives testimony in municipal or district court regarding cases.
  • Completes all duties assigned by supervisor, keeps job site and work area clean, and must keep tools clean that are used in performing work.
  • Provides backup to subordinate positions as needed.
  • Serves on various employee or other committees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
