Coastal Project Engineer II

Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson•Charleston, SC

About The Position

Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson (JMT) is seeking a Coastal Engineer to help deliver complex coastal and resilience projects addressing flood risk reduction, shoreline protection, and adaptation. The work uses advanced modeling, nature-based solutions, and engineering design to create resilient, practical outcomes. The role supports technical execution on multidisciplinary projects, translating coastal-process analysis and modeling into implementable solutions from concept through design and construction documentation. The engineer works with senior staff, clients, regulatory agencies, and multidisciplinary teams. The position contributes to planning, analysis, modeling, design, permitting, quality assurance and quality control, construction bid-package preparation, and monitoring for a broad range of coastal engineering projects and studies. It offers opportunities to take on greater responsibility in technical leadership and project delivery, engage with clients and stakeholders, contribute to proposals and strategic growth, mentor junior staff, and help develop approaches to coastal resilience and adaptation.

Requirements

  • Experience applying coastal engineering principles, including waves, storm surge, sediment transport, and shoreline dynamics.
  • Hands-on experience with numerical modeling tools such as ADCIRC, SWAN, CMS, XBeach, Delft3D, DHI, or similar.
  • Ability to develop engineering designs for shoreline protection, coastal structures, and nature-based solutions.
  • Ability to integrate green-gray infrastructure into resilient, constructible designs.
  • Experience preparing engineering plans, specifications, and technical reports.
  • Familiarity with USACE, FEMA, and state and local regulatory frameworks and permitting processes.
  • Ability to collaborate across structural, geotechnical, environmental, and civil disciplines.
  • Technical expertise, analytical capability, and professional skills necessary to deliver complex coastal and resilience projects.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and support planning, analysis, and design for coastal engineering projects, including shoreline protection, flood risk reduction, and resilience solutions.
  • Prepare and oversee technical deliverables, including engineering reports, design drawings, specifications, bid packages, and permit applications.
  • Apply relevant industry standards and guidance, including USACE, FEMA, AASHTO, FHWA, and ASCE, to develop practical engineering solutions.
  • Provide technical oversight and quality assurance/quality control for project deliverables in accordance with JMT standards and engineering best practices.
  • Mentor junior staff and support their development in coastal engineering analysis, modeling, and design.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate coastal engineering with structural, environmental, and transportation components.
  • Analyze field data, surveys, metocean data, and geospatial datasets to support engineering evaluations and design decisions.
  • Develop and apply numerical models for coastal processes, including waves, water levels, storm surge, and sea-level-rise scenarios.
  • Conduct statistical and risk-based analyses, including extreme-value analysis, to quantify coastal hazards and inform resilient designs.
  • Collaborate with clients, regulatory agencies, contractors, and stakeholders to advance project objectives and meet permitting and regulatory requirements.
  • Support coordination during design, permitting, and construction, including site visits and field investigations.
  • Communicate technical concepts through presentations, meetings, and written documentation for diverse audiences.
  • Contribute to proposal development, including technical approaches, scopes, budgets, and schedules.
  • Support strategic growth initiatives, identify opportunities, strengthen client relationships, and participate in internal planning and market-facing activities for JMT’s coastal practice.
