The Northern Sites Manager is responsible for the stewardship of three northern sites of the North Carolina Coastal Reserve and National Estuarine Research Reserve: the Currituck Banks component of the North Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserve and the state Kitty Hawk Woods and Buxton Woods components, totaling 3,782 acres. The geographic difference between the three sites and remoteness of the sites requires an incumbent to work independently under general supervision. The purpose of the Reserve program is to manage sites representative of North Carolina’s coastal ecosystems to 1) conduct long-term research and monitoring to promote sound management of these ecosystems; 2) increase understanding of these ecosystems, their importance, and the effects humans have on them; and 3) accommodate compatible traditional uses. Work is multi-disciplinary, and assignments address moderate to complex environmental issues and projects. The employee works closely across Reserve program staff to meet the multi-disciplinary purposes of the program. The Northern Sites Manager must demonstrate the ability to engage with communities, work independently and as a part of a team, and have strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. This position requires work in undeveloped outdoor settings using hand and powered tools such as chainsaws in a variety of weather conditions and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Valid driver’s license required.
