About The Position

This is a part-time position for the 2026-2027 school year. The Literacy Coach will work with teachers to ensure the effective implementation of scientifically-based literacy research programs. This role involves providing direct, classroom-based professional development for teachers through regular modeling of research-based literacy instruction. The coach will collaborate with all teachers, including those in Exceptional Student Education, content areas, and elective areas, prioritizing coaching and mentoring for maximum impact on student achievement. A key responsibility is mentoring teachers in providing intensive intervention instruction for struggling students, including Limited English Proficient students. The coach will also model lessons in effective and differentiated reading instruction, facilitate teacher study groups on reading research, and organize and lead needs-based professional development programs focused on achieving reading benchmarks. Interpersonal skills are essential for building trust with teachers and school leadership as part of an academic coaching team. The coach will guide teachers in effective literacy instructional strategies through interrelated content, coordinate ongoing professional development through grade-level meetings, demonstrations, and study groups, and model enthusiasm and commitment to focused reading instruction. Additionally, the coach will provide instructional support for implementing state and district initiatives and assist content area teachers with effective strategies for content instruction and reading problem prevention/remediation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • Valid Florida teaching certificate in reading K-12 or reading endorsement.
  • Three (3) years of Highly Effective/Effective classroom teaching experience.
  • Clear and concise oral and written communication skills.
  • Analytical, mathematical, organizational, and prioritization skills.
  • Flexibility and adaptability in dealing with rapidly changing priorities and demands.
  • Knowledge of major theories of language development, cognition, and learning and the ability to use these theories to implement a well-planned and comprehensive reading and written language program.
  • Knowledge of current research about the nature and purposes of reading, oral and written language, and about widely used approaches to reading and oral and written language instruction.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to interpret and enforce pertinent regulations, policies, and procedures for the functional area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of and experience using multiple project management tools and methodologies.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA, Public Records, Sunshine Law, FERPA, and other laws/regulations related to student and employee privacy, public information, and records retention.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel.
  • Ability to deliver high-quality customer service in a timely and professional manner.
  • Ability to design and deliver professional teacher and parent development opportunities and programs.

Responsibilities

  • Work with teachers to ensure that scientifically-based literacy-researched programs are implemented with fidelity.
  • Provide direct, classroom-based, professional development for teachers through regular modeling of research-based literacy instruction.
  • Work with all teachers (including Exceptional Student Education, content area, and elective areas) in the schools they serve, prioritizing coaching and mentoring time with those teachers, activities, and roles that will have the greatest impact on student achievement.
  • Mentor teachers in providing appropriate intensive intervention instruction for struggling students, including those who are Limited English Proficient.
  • Model lessons in effective reading instruction, including lessons that provide differentiated instruction.
  • Facilitate teacher study groups regarding current reading research and effective reading instruction.
  • Organize and lead professional development programs which are needs-based and focused on the accomplishments of the established reading benchmarks.
  • Demonstrate interpersonal skills as a member of an academic coaching team and build trust with teachers and school leadership.
  • Coach teachers in effective literacy instructional strategies through interrelated content.
  • Coordinate and schedule ongoing professional development of teachers through activities such as coaching grade level meetings, classroom demonstrations, and study groups.
  • Model enthusiasm, commitment, and intensity for focused reading instruction.
  • Provide instructional support for teachers in the implementation of the initiatives of the Department of Education for the State of Florida and Lee County.
  • Assist content area teachers by providing and demonstrating effective strategies for content instruction to students.
  • Coach teachers in the latest techniques for the prevention and remediation of reading problems.
  • Model effective teaching strategies and techniques.
